I hate the depth finder on this boat, it's too small and hard to get to through the menu. I would like to install a new in dash unit and was wondering if I could use the existing thru hull transducer or is it specific to the Yamaha setup? Any input would be appreciated.

Great question. ...I am planning on purchasing a Garmin 43dv combo GPS /depth finder and would love to be able to use the current transducer

I'm looking at the same Garmin. It can plot the river bottom contours on the gps! I'm pretty sure you will need to use their dual band transducer.

I'm not looking for anything that fancy, just want to see the depth easily.

Typically you need the transducer that is designed to work with the Garmin. Having a fish finder (or better) for depth is excellent, once of the best mods. I put one in my new boat before it hit the water for the first time. I boat in a variable depth river and I can see the sand bars coming based on the rising profile of the bottom. Cam.
