We do mostly saltwater boating and this year my kids (10 and 8) would like to start fishing. I am looking for suggestions on how on a beginner rod/reel that my kids could easily handle. We would mostly do bottom fishing for fluke, etc.

Not looking for those kid kits you find at Walmart. They have those already and don't think they could handle saltwater fishing

I went to Dicks Sporting Goods and Cabela's to look for some starter combos for the kids last year.

Depending on your budget you can get some decent combos and starter gear for about 100.

Looks like you are in CT as well. We did some fishing in the sound and the kids loved it. We also used the rods in the CT river. Some pretty big fish in the river as well.

If you are bottom fishing you may want a conventional reel. I went with a spinning reel for the kids. Good casting reel.

Other things to consider is do you want a 2 piece so it would breakdown and fit under the seat.

I went with the https://www.dickssportinggoods.com/...mbo-16pnfufrc6000ll7fcom/16pnfufrc6000ll7fcom

and the 2 piece option to leave on the boat under the seat.

So far both rods have performed well. I would suggest 9' rod at min and heavier line. My son had a 2 footer and the line broke right before we could net it.
