I am new to the forum and have a quick question. We are the proud new owners of a 2018 242 Limited S E-series.
We had her out on Sunday to do the break in procedures and the check engine light came on. It said Stop BCU. Both times this happened we were coming to a stop, and had just turned off the engines.
Does anyone know what that means? Or what it could have been?

I have 2019 242 limite S e series. Same problem since I bought boat in Feb 2019. Your buckets hit something and the software freaked out and can't resynchronize so that they match. One bucket is prob up while the other is down etc... This will cause the throttle to not do it's intended job. Search BCU up above and you'll see a couple of other threads on this. Some recommend disconnecting batteries etc... but it's ridiculous. Should have to do this over and over again. System should recognize and reset/calibrate itself.

We’re having same issue with our 2019 242XE. The reverse bucket gets stuck in reverse on the starboard engine while the port is normal. The starboard engine starts but will not go into forward or reverse. “STOP BCU”. Been back to the dealer once. They thought it was due to a recall but apparently it wasn’t. Is the BCU easy to replace? Has anyone tried that? This issue has been since day 1.

Same issue. I just posted in another thread.
There is a thought of the steering wheel completely left or right and the shutdown of the engine and the bucket not returning properly. I think it’s binding or stiff and throwing an error. I’ve solved it everytime by turning off batteries and wiggle the bucket. I didn’t pay attention to steering in my case but next time I will pay attention to everything.

As I can tell from everyone with the problem is that it’s not consistent and dealer can’t reproduce so it seems pointless until we can reproduce the issue.

The more I think about it... It is extremely unsafe as it happened to me on approach to a dock with significant current. Luckily I wasn’t going fast or it would have been a disaster! From my memory of that instance, due to current I was switching from forward to reverse a bunch to fight the current and not hit dock on approach. I can’t recall on any occasion if my throttle was synced or not.

Mike,
I had the same problem with my boat when I first put it in the water last year. It was very frustrating. In the compartment in front of the drivers seat there is a black cover on the floor. Under the cover is the control cylinders for the steering system. I slowly mover the cylinders back and forth to see if there was anything that would inhibit the movement. I found a piece of debris in the grease! with this removed. I put everything back together and it has worked fine ever since. It is my opinion or observation that Yamaha's factory workers do not take care and attention in the assembly of their boats. Mine is full of small particulates, stress, nuts and washers as well as chunks of fiberglass.
This is my 4th Yamaha boat.

My family just purchased a 2020 242xe and were getting the bcu error code and getting no power forward or in reverse, any recommendations?

Call your dealer and make sure you reference there are dozens of people on this forum with the same issue. My dealer finally found that the reverse bucket cables need to be replaced.

they bind when you have a hard right or left turn and are going forwardand reverse. The computer senses the binding and doesn’t want to break the controls so it throws an error.
This happens mostly when I’m navigating docking where you would use steering plus throttle steering (left / right) trust control.
I am hyper sensitive to it so I can usually have a boating day without the issue.

rny dealer ordered the cables, so I’m awaiting that.

yamaha has to acknowledge this more formally as it’s a huge safely issue. Sad to see this is still happening in the 2020’s.
