Hey guys just jumped into a well loved Yamaha Exciter, and boy is it fun! Just have a question: Does the fuel pump work off of suction/venturi or is it electronic? I'm curious because it doesnt prime itself, and the left engine does at WOT about once a trip if it's not warmed up. (I have 2 primer bulbs installed.) Also it sounds like the lh eng idles lower than the right (tachs are unreliable). I am thinking that the lower idle is not burning off all the oil, and that's why she is dying, but idk. I work on airplanes for a living. Boats seem different especially 2 strokes. I'm using some Lucas "no smoke" marine oil at 50:1, and unleaded 100% gas.

Welcome, great choice for a boat!

Sounds like you need to rebuild the carbs. Tachs are known to go bad. There’s a few options for replacements, but I believe the OEM ones have a lifetime warranty. You can have them rebuilt by the original mfr for something like a $25 service fee.

There is an adjustment to set the idle higher so it won’t stall. But you really should rebuild the carbs first.

I believe the exciters had a single impulse fuel pump for each engine. Some people added electric fuel pumps as an “upgrade”.

Right on! I'll look into redoing the carbs. The service manual is sorta vague. Is there another manual that's maybe more user friendly for the engines specifically?

Here’s the mikuni manual. Definitely use the Mikuni kits and not the aftermarket ones.

Here’s a service manual for an ls2000. I think it uses the same engines as your exciter (65u 1200 npv 135hp)

There’s some google links for exciter specific service manuals. But I haven’t tried to download one as some of the sites seem a little sketchy. EBay should have a hard copy available.

glad to have you on board, update your profile with your location so we know where your at,

be sure to either upgrade the oil lines or switch to pre-mix, the original oil lines caused a lot of engine failures,
