Good evening!
I am looking very seriously at a 2013 242 Limited S to replace my (now sold) 2011 AR210. The current owner has had since new and I'm very serious about buying it. I thought the 242's all had hour meters, but apparently not. However, it does appear to have a "gas used" meter showing around 270 gallons total. Any idea what that would equate to from an hours perspective on average? Obviously it would vary tremendously upon the type of usage, but I'm just looking for some "real world" examples. Anyone got an idea?

On another note, I can't wait to have the extra power and size with the 242! The 210 served us well, but I was really ready to move on. Also, the 242 has the Cobra steering setup and I had the Thrust Vectors. Looking forward to comparing.

270 gallons is nothing. burning 10 gallons an hour would put it at 27 hours and that would be very optimistic.
That gallon meter must have been reset
 
That's a good point. Didn't really back into the math. I have the software for checking, but wanted to do a gut check before I made the long drive. Not a big deal, I'll just check it when I see it in person.

@M2krafty ....the one data stream that is NOT supposed to be able to be zeroed-out is the hour meter (for many reasons). That 2013 must have one and if so why was it re-set to zero or not showing at all. It is my belief that only a Yamaha technician can re-set the hours to zero. IMO you need an answer. :cool:
 
@M2krafty , I would bet $100 the 242 Ls you are looking at has a lot more the number of gallons used. Press the one both of the two buttons on the each gauge while the engines are on and a attached to the hose or while the boat is in the water and you should cycle through all the telemetry available (e.g. gallons per hour, top speed, water depth and temperature, etc.). I have all this and more on my 2010 242 LS so the 2013 should have it as well.

Might actually be able to reset that counter now that I'm thinking of it.(gallons used that is)

It should show hours also. the 240 series after 2010 can display hours in the Tachometer info.
You can scroll though the 2 bars of information on the bottom of each tach. I think if you hold the left bottom for five seconds and when it flashes you can scroll though multiple parameters.

What I know for sure is that you can get the hours from the tach, no laptop needed.
Motors must be running (or just bumped- to turn on Tack display) Trach menu will time out quickly and turn OFF if you stop pressing buttons.

@Neutron ......wow hour meters have been on boats since at least the 90s for obvious reasons. I remember you'd come across a boat that had ridiculously low hours for its age and sometimes appearance (usually in a window at the bottom of the speedo) and question the owner who would say "I had to replace the speedo" which would raise red flags. My 2018 Yamaha SVHO had an hour meter that you could not zero-out. You could zero-out every other data point but not the hours. Of course mt 2020 Sx195 has an hour meter that can not be zeroed-out. VERY interesting I wonder when Yamaha introduced hour meters on their marine products? :cool:

Seems like it's something they should have done (and it seems like it was addressed with the model of boat in question). However, my 2011 AR 210 definitely did NOT have an hour meter. You have check it via the Yamaha YDS software and a laptop.

It was the cause of 2 coil packs going bad and we yanked the aftermarket hours meter to prevent any further problems.

when we went to 4 stroke/ecu's in 2004 we could read them via the YDS but there was no display in the boat, that's why some would install the aftermarket coil sensor

in 2010 they added the hour meter on the dashboard gauge LCD,

I haven't, but the current owner has played around with it to no avail. I'm 5 hours away and am just trying to get a reading before I get there. Worse case, I use the YDS software when I see it.

I can’t speak to an AR 240 but here is a link and screenshot of the owner’s manual for a 2013 242 LS (I doubt the 240 ARs or SXs have different gauges).


@M2krafty i believe the GPH (gallons per hour) is the information you are seeking. Additionally you cannot accurately guage this by engine hours because GPH varies with how hard the engine is worked. For example, at top speed / wide open throttle my boat burns 26 gallons per hour, at cruising speed it burns lot less. Finally, these gauges didn’t change until 2015 when the connect system replaced them as I recall.

@Neutron as I am sure you know there are hundreds of options to install hour meters that don't involve using the coil. There are a number of excellent manufacturers that use the run position of the ignition switch to activate the hour meter. Many options. I find it astounding that Yamaha who touts themselves as industry leaders wouldn't have a basic but critical gauge (hour meter) that pretty much all entry level boats had in 1990. On the boats I owned with high performance engines we would even have a second set of "non-zeroable" gauges for our records. One of my favorite was Gaffrig. As my grandfather, with his breathed on Dodge used to say, "If you are gonna brag you had better be able to drag!" :cool:
 
The engine needs to try to start to turn on the display in the bottom of the tachometer. They dont need to start, just need to bump for 0.5 sec. If owner is worried about starting the engines, Have him disconnect the tether cord below the throttles, engines will crank but not start (no fuel or ignition)

It is safe to run the engines for 1 minute. (common knowledge)

Display does not stay on long, you may need to do many times before you get to the display you want and familiar with the buttons.

The 230 series boats which were discontinued at the end of 2009 did NOT have hour meters. I had to take my 2006 into the dealer and to my local power sports shop to have the hours read when I considered trading it in and when I sold it respectively. The cost was between $15 and $30 Per engine nearly 10 years ago.
both multi function gauges in my 2010 242 have an hour meter read out. The only thing I can do other than read through the information presented is start a diagnostic. I can’t reset the hours like a trip meter, the hours are locked similar to How an odometer on a Car is.

I agree, i did not and would not install any inductive style hour meter/ tach on any engine unless it was for diagnostic purposes only and temporary.
The owner opted for none after it caused a cel and a missfire.

I have a YDS which covers everything to current. Not sure yet for 2021 boats. But it does all yamaha waverunners, boats and outboards. So if we need info like hours if he sells it we can access it

@Ronnie ....very informative. My 2018 Waverunner SVHO and my 2020 SX195 both have Yamaha factory hour meters that can not be zeroed-out which is, in my opinion, as it should be! :cool:
