I have a 2001 Sugar Sand Mirage with the Mercury 175. I only have one key and realised that is probably a bad idea for obvious reasons. But I'm not really sure where to start on trying to get a new one. Do I purchase a blank from somewhere and have it cut locally? It isn't a normal looking car type key as it has a rubber shroud around it that comes down over the sides of the key hole(ignition switch) when inserted, I assume to keep water out. Thats probably a typical feature on boat keys but I'm not sure so giving out all the info I can.

I had no idea this existed. I bought my boat with one key and headed to Home Depot to get a spare. Just checked Amazon and they sell key caps that you can add to a boat key.
I didn't get one as I have not seen other boat keys with this cap so I figure the ignition switch likes to get wet.

Not sure about that exact brand, but for manufacturers that vary their keys, there typically is a number on the key that a dealer can look up and replace. Often they have replacement keys in stock. If that doesn't work, a simple alternative is just buy another switch. It's usually a simple repair.
