My mother passed away several years ago at 92-1/2, it was a blessing as she had dementia or/and Alzheimer’s. She didn’t know her family, couldn’t feed herself and couldn’t transfer. She was a very successful legal secretary for her time, worked for two governors and a federal judge. At her service, attended by 75-100 people, folks came up to my brother, his wife, my wife and son, along with myself telling us stories of my mother. They told us how funny she was, we rarely saw her smile or laugh, told us how religious she was, neither my brother or myself had ever been to a Sunday church service with her. We were told how generous she was, I borrowed money from her with a repayment contract. People told us that she encouraged and inspired them, she always downgraded my brother and myself.
We new her to hold a grudge. Was resentful for her siblings because she perceived that they did better than she did. Resented that her husband, my/our dad passed away at 52(stroke) and left her alone with two boys and said so. Mind you, the house was paid for and there was money in the bank. She resented my wife and would complement her in the negative, ie, pretty outfit, but the color doesn’t work for you, you look good, have you put on a few pounds, dinner was good but probably could have cooked a few minutes longer, etc!
We really didn’t know her….
And then there’s my mother in law! A whole other story!
