Hey everyone!
I would like to invite you all to come join me and my family on July 11 to the Gary Air show.
We put in at Portage public Marina. But first, more about the event!!!
http://gary-airshow.com/
This show is absolutely free! Thousands of boat will be out on the beautiful Lake Michigan along Indiana's south shore beaches for this event. The show is focused on Miller beach and you can come watch via car and find parking and walk the beach which will be PACKED! OR, you can come out on the boat with us and raft up to watch the show. Get out there early and get a good spot right up front and the planes will DIVE bomb you! We had the thunderbirds actually turn straight up above us last time (two years ago) and you could literally feel it!
In any case, if you're now interested, let me know how we hope to be doing things.
1. We put in at Portage Public Marina. This is usually a $10 charge for launching the boats and they have a pretty good sized parking lot. However, with an event like this, you really need to get there early and get a spot! We may even plan on having breakfast out on the boat. The Marina is pretty nice, but the water looks pretty dirty. I wouldn't swim in it. If Portage is full, there is another marina just before it as well, called Doyne's Marine. The launch isn't as nice, but they are a good place as well. A little harder to launch as you launch into the river there.

You can of course come from other places as well!!! Those of you on the more northwest side of the lake may want to try something like
East Chicago Marina
3301 Aldis St
East Chicago, IN 46312
OR
Hammond Yacht Club
731 Casino Center Dr
Hammond, IN 46320
And those of you coming from the east may want to try something like
Michigan City Port Authority
200 Heisman Harbor
Michigan City, IN 46360
Michigan City also has the Lighthouse premium outlets, so beware!!!
2. Once we put in at Portage (or wherever) the park and show are just out of the port to the west.
Coordinates are 41.623519, -87.260286 or 41°37'24.7"N 87°15'37.0"W
This would be the perfect spot for viewing the show!!!
3. Since we go out EARLY and eat breakfast on the water, we head over to the warm water discharge of the nearby steel mill. No, you won't come out green. No, it's not toxic. All they do is suck water from the lake, cool the steel, and put it back out. They are allowed a maximum of 10 degrees warmer than the lake temperature. What the discharge does is create a wonderful sand bar area for all the boats to come party it up. You basically have a large lazy river from the discharge that's nice and warm!!! Some fish will tend to be just outside the mouth of the "river" due to the warmth as well, but area usually scared off by the time the boats are hanging around there. Play in the sand, beach the boat, check out the yachts, etc. etc.
Coordinates: 41.647748, -87.120537 or 41°38'51.9"N 87°07'13.9"W
4. We plan on eating lunch around where the show will be as it will get very crowded very fast. There will start to be coast guard sectioning off the area so you need to be far enough out where it isn't an issue, but close enough where the planes will still be buzzing the tops of the sailboats. Anyone that needs to use the grill, I SHOULD have it out because I'll be grinning from ear to ear with that shiny piece of stainless hanging off my boat and all the burgers making wonderful smells for all to be jealous of! Come join me and raft up!!!
5. Afterwards, we hang out there and wait for some of the boats to take off but they will create a lot of waves. So if this is a bit too much, then book outta there before the show is over, but good luck, the boats will be TIGHT packed in there if you're up front!!! After all that, we may go to the warm water discharge again, depending on the time and conditions.
6. And finally, my family usually ends up at the Quaker Steak and Lube just on the way in to the Portage Marina. Decent food with a fast car theme. What's not to love? Some cold brews and good food is always welcome at the end of a day!
So let me know if you want to come out!! Lets plan it out together!
This will really be my first trip out on the boat for the year, so it's pretty exciting for me, as you can tell, and we spend the whole day out on the water.
