I’ve seen that this topic has come up before and hopefully someone can shed some light on my confusion.
I’ve been using Kn-204 oil filters on my 2008 Ar-210 for a few years now, never an issue. I recently had to swap one of my engines for a 06 waverunner engine. They are both MR-1’s. I went to change the oil on the 06 engine and the Kn-204 won’t screw on. It wants to cross-thread. The Yamaha filter that was on there threaded right back on so I know my threads are fine. I thought the only difference between a 204 and 303 filter was the canister volume (the smaller profile filter allowed for clearance issues). Why on earth would a 2006 and 2008 mr1 have different oil filter threads? I tried (2) kn-204’s to be sure. I know the K&N site says to use the 303, but I was hoping to use the exact same filters on both engines.
I had to switch back to the Yamaha filter at twice the price. I called k&n but they can’t confirm thread pitch between the 204 and 303 and said I had to use the 303.
Thoughts?

Did you buy a 303 and try it?

No, I didn’t want to mess with it again so I bought the sure thing (yamaha filter). I keep the boat about 30 minutes from my house and between the drive back and forth, the messiness of filter changes, and central Florida heat in the summer, I just needed it done.
I’ll stick with the Yamaha filter on the 2006 and the kn204 on the 2008 for now and maybe try the 303 next oil change.
Ive attached a photo of the Yamaha and K&n threads.

I just pulled the kn-204 off my bad 2008 engine and tried to thread on the new kn-204 and it won’t fit.
I should mention that my new filter is the kn-204c, where the c stands for ‘chrome’. I bought that one bc it was cheaper on amazon and I didn’t care what it looked like. KN confirms the 204 and 204c are the same other than the chrome.
Looks like I just got my filters from a bad batch.
