I saw this on Yahoo yesterday and didn't really think much about it. Today my corporation just issued an alert for all outside sales and employess that are not behind the corporate firewall to discontinue using IE and download Google Chrome or Firefox for a browser. Our IT department isn't usually concerned about most of these things, so since they issued this alert I took it seriously and just switched to Firefox. Firefox is more compatible with our Oracle ERP system.

I love Firefox or chrome...but I use ie because that is what I have to code for. You would not believe all the bs that has to go into making a website look and work the same for multiple browsers (especially when some can turn off JavaScript).

All software support has to come to an end at some point. It still amazes me that Microsoft supported it for 12 years.

The software lifecycle has never been a secret.

True, but the customers also have something to say about it. With the ugly rollouts (and products, in some people's view) of Vista and 8, many are happy and comfortable with XP. Microsoft will do what they will, but as customer choice increases, they have to be a bit more careful on these issues.
