2008 212x. Engine rebuilt before purchase at 117 hours. Currently 400 hours.
I had an SBT piston in cylinder 3 come apart at 8000 rpm while tubing (probably because I was towing from the tower ?). No noise at all, engine just dropped dead. The head is beat up. The cylinder wall is ate up from the wrist pin. I assume that the head is beyond repair. Has anyone used the SBT head exchange? I am leaning toward that route. I also assume that the cylinder is too far gone to bore out and drop in oversized pistons. That would leave me needing new cases and rebuild from there. Anyone have a different option?

Sorry to hear that, @Seedogg. Looks like a stuck valve. Is the lifter cracked? Jaycave had a similar failure. Engine failure I think his originated from a delaminated chain guide.

I’d look for an fx waverunner with the same 160 hp, 1,052 cc engine. I think they came in the 2004 to 2009 models. My ‘06 will be for sale soon but I’m not parting it out nor delivering it.

i bought a used Seadoo with an sbt engine it which ran fine for a few years but eventually failed at the worst possible time. I sold that ski for scrap a few days afterward.

im Sorry to hear / read about your troubles and hope you find a solution quickly and as inexpensively as possible.

@Seedogg
Are those hours accurate?
Was this a salt water boat prior to you buying it?
Just would like more info as I have the same boat.

@WREKS Yes, the lifter was in two pieces.

@buckbuck The hours are correct. I don't remember why it was rebuilt the first time, but it was covered by Yamaha if I remember correctly. The other factory motor is in great shape with compression on spec.

These are California motors so not sure if a swap would be as simple as normal. I would prefer to rebuild it myself if I could find a case available somewhere. I think that would be my cheaper option as well.

@Seedogg Here are some ski's here on the cheap, may be an option. Depending on the lot and if anyone can bid, if there is no reserve, highest bid gets it at the end of the auction.

Wrecked, Used & Salvage Yamaha boat for Auction at Copart Auto Auctions
FYI I looked into buying a Waverunner from cop art a few years ago. It turned out not to be as cheap as I had hoped. my understanding is that these are all or mostly vehicles that insurance companies have declared totaled and paid out on which the insurance companies are now trying to recover some/as much of the money they paid out as possible.

Unless you are a dealer you have to purchase through a broker, copart will match you with one for $400. The makeup you pay varies with your method of payment, cashiers check or credit card. If the ski doesn’t come on a trailer you have to pay copart to forklift onto a trailer you bring to the site. You must also make payment and take possession of the vehicle with 24 hours of the sale. Also, if you want to see the ski in person you have to pay an entrance fee of $75 to do so and from what I can tell you can’t do a detailed inspection of the vehicle (guys have bought used Tesla’s only to find when they got it home that some had their electric motors and or batteries removed). Finally there are well documented issues with coparts auction system policies and practices, especially where reserve prices are concerned.

I know a dealer that would help me avoid the broker fee but after watching a few you tube videos about copart I’m still reluctant to purchase anything from them. If they had a Waverunner at the location near me I’d take another look.

unless your boat is designated as a CA boat it should have the same motors as others of the same boat model.

see the model numbers in the attached screen shot. The ca motors usually have catalytic converters and produce a little less hp but most of the other parts are the same as their non ca counterparts, at least that is what I’ve read over the years. I don’t think this was an issue until 2010 or 2012.

This is not entirely correct. I have personally purchased two vehicles from them and save a great deal of money. I did not need to use their broker or any broker. It all depends on the lot and whom it is available for. Some are for dealers only and some the General public, as long as you sign up to be a member and valid identification can bid on public/member available items. Additionally I had no issues or added fees, other than delivery of the vehicle and the process was smooth. Of course depending on the cost and what you are saving and your desired out come a broker may be the way to go. Additional fees for inspection and moving I cannot comment on.

As far purchasing watercraft, I have not done that. Even if there are other fees, it still may be cheaper than sourcing an engine somewhere else. I dunno, put it out there as food for thought of course.

Bidding practices and polices... I have seen the same things @Ronnie is referring to in posts and forums. I would always assume that there could be things going on, so tread diligently. I don't know if I got the best bid/price or if it was artificial manipulated by the system or individuals. But it was better than what we could find any where else.

@Seedogg Did it look similar to this, and if it did, were there any pieces of plastic floating around, as in Jaycav's well documented Engine failure ?

@WREKS Yes, the lifter was broke like that. My timing chain guides are not damaged or delaminated in any way.

@buckbuck I was told no saltwater and I see no signs of saltwater use either. Previous owner was a member here and I feel is very trustworthy.

@Ronnie I am positive that I have California motors. FAT1100ALG.

@Seedogg What about the chain guide pressed into the underside of the valve cover? Is it still intact?

@Seedogg Corresponding to the failed cylinder-are all of the valves in the head still under spring compression?

Exhaust valve in red has a broken spring, missing spring locks and broken lifter. Valve is also bent.
Intake valve in blue functions, but is bent.
All valves move freely.
The only value that looks like it had impact is the center intake valve. It moves freely and is not bent.

Side note: When I pulled the spark plug on the water, the electrode was flattened. It did not look like it had any other impact.

Oh man. Sorry to hear about your engine issue. Clearly you were having too much fun and at a time like this, the boating gods will have none of that. ?

I had an engine issue (nothing catastrophic like yours) a few years ago And found a low hour used one out of a waverunner, on eBay, shipped to me for under $2k. Before buying it, I looked at every part of the engine on a parts web site to verify if I’d have any issues running the engine. The only part that had a different number was the intake cam. I figured that I could always swap it out for the original one if I had an issue. However, it runs perfect in the boat. I’ve since rebuilt the original (keeping it as a spare). It’s a non-ho engine, otherwise I’d offer to sell it to you. imho, I’d replace it with a good used Yamaha engine than one from SBT. Too many similar stories to yours.

Either way, good luck with your decision. Hope you’re back on the water soon.

@Seedogg Questions: Did you recover any or both of the spring lock(s)? If you did-what do they look like now? I think the broken valve spring is suspect.
