Need some help from the forum. On the way home from the lake today we scrapped the bottom of the boat going down hill. Any advice on repairing the keel that was damaged? Would sanding it out and repairing with gel coat be sufficient? It seems like mostly a surface scrape of the gel coat on the keel. See pics.

Hard to tell where it is at on the keel but I would think either Spectrum gel coat or epoxy followed by a keel guard.

Prob about a 1k professional repair.

I’m gonna take the advice of the forum experts. I’ll repair with gelcoat and place a keel guard over that. Ordered 3 gel coat kits from Spectrum today. If you don’t already know, you can call Yamaha boats with boat vin and the will give you the color match kit codes to order from Spectrum. Called Spectrum after to order and order is on the way. 3 spectrum kits were total of $170 and keel guard another $175. If all goes well I should save $650 compared to a professional repair. Thank you to the forum experts for helping me through it and helping me save some cash.

Sorry that happened. I didn’t even know it was possible while on trailer. I’m trying to figure out how that happened going downhill. Can you describe a little bit more so we can avoid it?

I didn’t think it was possible either. I told the wife it was the trailer that hit, not the boat. The trailer protects the boat is what I assured her. She still doesn’t know it happened. I was actually slowly turning right in a dip downhill then back uphill in the road. Avoid the downhill, uphill dips in road is the takeaway for me. We turned around to get a sweatshirt my son left in the boat and it flew out of the boat when heading home. One hell of an expensive sweatshirt.

I see. Thanks! That’s good to know. I might consider getting a guard now. When I blow up your pics, those gashes look really deep. Just a thought. If you ever want to sell it, you might want to have a pro do it so it’s thorough and looks great. That way you can have before and after pics for whoever you sell it to. I’m sure they would have some concerns not knowing what it looks like under that guard. Just a thought. Good luck.

Update in case anyone else ever has this happen to them. Sanded down the area to prep for applying the gel coat. Mixed up the gel coat from spectrum that was color match and applied to area. Allowing to dry. Planning to start wet sanding tomorrow to smooth it out. Finish with 3m medium cutting compound after sanding. Pics of sanding and applying the gel coat in this post.
