Hey guys and gals,

I wanted to give all of you a heads up about our new short film which we just finished today. It is titled Yamaha Surf School. We plan to premier the short film tomorrow morning at 10:00 Central Time on YouTube. It will also be viewable on FB as well.

We created this film to help people better understand what a surf wave should look like and what it should not look like. In the film we take you through the process of seeing a surf wave created by 3 different Yamaha boats, a 242X, a 212X and an AR195. We'll show you the surf wave each of them creates as equipped from the factory. Then we'll show what the wave looks like with some ballast added but improperly placed. And finally we'll show you the wave when the ballast has been properly placed and Thrust Vector Wakes installed.

We tried to condense the film down to under 8 minutes, which we achieved, plus we endeavored to make it as simple and uncomplicated as we could. Though surfing can be a bit of a science we believe that after watching this film you'll better understand how to take your Yamaha Boat surfing and most importantly, everyone in your party will have a ton of fun!

Please share this with your Yamaha buddies and we look forward to sharing this project with you tomorrow morning!

If you could show me how to get my 230 to make a wave like that I'll definitely watch

Yamaha Surf School

I watched the video focusing on the AR195 you use a total of 1,000 lbs on the swim platform and another 550 lbs on the rear seat to produce the wake. The boat has a max capacity weight of 8 people or 1,600 lbs. It blows me away that you would want to lug around 1,550 lbs in lead that would put the boat over the legal weight capacity. Seem rather unsafe in my opinion.

You wouldn't want to lug all that weight around all day on a jet boat, especially on a single engine. That's the advantage of water ballast is drain when you don't need it and save your gas + revving to the moon. Looks like a lot of bow rise to me which can be dangerous. On a busy day you would need to have good visibility to keep an eye on the lake idiots. Also would recommend a good secondary bilge pump if anyone is planning on burying the rub rail because Yamaha doesn't do a great job of sealing the upper and lower halves of the boat at the rub rail. Wave looks good but still relatively short which is a common thing on these boats. You could probably lengthen it by lowering the bow.

For testing it works best for us to use steel shot. It is a bit of a bear to move all of it from boat to boat on shoot days, but once in place it is super easy to fine tune the wave shape by moving a bag from on place to another. Water bags would likely be the best solution long term if you can get the bag secured on that lower platform and you've locked in your preferred setup. We like the shot because it does not move once placed so no need to figure out how to secure it.

Also any wake boat today is adding well more weight than recommended by the coast guard. It is simply the way it goes while pursuing the perfect wave. In my opinion we're producing more wave height with less weight than most other players in the game. For instance Yamaha adds 1400lbs of water weight to the 212X and on top of that still allows 10 passengers to get on board without any obvious warnings against such a setup. We're surfing really well with only 1200 lbs of ballast in some of our videos. Plus in instances where there are more people on board you can get away with less steel shot or water weight. Ballast can take many forms. When there are less people on the boat then you can use more ballast such as water weight or steel shot or whatever heavy object you have laying around.

I don't know about other wake boats but the weight placard on mine is weight in addition to stock ballast. For me it's 17 persons or 2,800 lbs in addition to stock ballast and otherwise stock boat. With upgraded ballast we will still be well below the limit and don't have a big crew on the boat. I would imagine the Yamaha's placard is the same so that number is what would determine being over the weight limit or not.

Wouldn't the additional ballast be considered “gear” for coast guard purposes? Along with everything else that isn’t bolted to the boat at the factory...anchors, life jackets, lunch etc. Never mind the standard wake boat load out of 320 pounds of wire, speakers and amplifiers.

17 persons? That i would like to see. Lol
I wouldn't put 17 people on a 30 footer.

I've had 15 people piled in it I think with room to spare :D

I would never want to have that many in the boat on the regular but she's big enough for it.

Yamaha very clearly states that the capacity plate maximum includes passengers AND ballast.

Moomba wake boats (and I believe other wake boats) clearly state that the capacity plate is passengers IN ADDITION TO ballast.

The loads recommended in the video above exceed the Yamaha stated USCG maximums.

I don’t surf but I’ve got to say I find these threads amusing.

Maybe I’m wrong but it seems like trying to surf behind a Yamaha is like towing a 20k RV behind a half ton. Sure it can be done but it’s be a whole lot safer, easier and enjoyable to just get an f350 (or a Moomba).

Great video good tips it’s really good to see the slick / flat water and depth listed as necessities .

Will, there are still no photos, video or info on the new deflector for the 24’ boats. What’s that status on that product and will we see it this spring? Those of us early adopters have been in “test mode” since ordering a year ago.

Holy Crap!

My bow has never been that high off the water!

No wonder my Wake Surfing sucks-I thought it was me (well, honestly-maybe it was me).

I definitely need more weight and better placement! Thanks Will for showing what it should look like!

The JetWash deflector is being patented now that it has gone through all the changes. Should ship spring 2020. Sorry for the delay. You're going to love it!

I'm so filled with anticipation! Thanks for the response!
We're getting awesome results with the prototype. Its going to be worth the wait!!

And please surf far away from other boaters so you wont cause there boats to slam against each other. we have some real bone head boaters here in my area that don't give a crap about others, they`ll be 20` off shore or 20` from the docks surfing and cause havoc with boats tied or accord to shore and do it 10 times back and forth! and they have room to go another 200` from shore and surf! sheez.
Great video anyway just made me have flash backs of idiots with boats..
