I’m planning my annual summer end trip to old Sacramento this year I was surprised to learn that the guest dock which is free for day use but costs $1.50 per dot per night (9p to 6a) is no longer available for overnight mooring. They are not taking reservations for day use or overnight mooring until further notice.

I called the dock manager directly after reading the news on the city’s web site and I visited the dock as well. When I visited the dock there were new signs on it reflecting no overnight use, it was also clearly not being maintained (dog shit and Unbagged garbage on it). However there was a boater preparing to leave who said he stayed over night and nobody approached him about it.

when I spoke to the dock manager (same guy over the last 10 years), he said the dock was closed to overnight use since early August which made sense since I visited in July and it was open. Anyway when I asked him if the closure was driven by Covid he said no, there have been violent incidents including a shooting so city officials decided to stop overnight use until further notice (Violators boats may be towed away at the owners expense). Again this seemed Legitimate since over the years especially last year I noticed that crowds on the dock at night have gotten louder and stay longer, last year a homeless guy with a boat chose to make the dock his home and I have never seen any supervision on the dock at night nor have I ever seen a cop on it.

the good news is that there is another public dock across the river, the bad news is that it is not that long and as far as I know space can’t be reserved in advance. Anyway I intend to use this dock instead this year.

Just something to be aware of if you are considering an overnight boating trip to old Sacramento. It’s a bummer since i consider this is the best overnight boating location.

Too bad...
I've been wanting to go up and see the River Cats play, actually today we were planning on driving up and doing the brew fest and I was going to go check out the guest dock. Thanks for the update.
