Hey all, looking for a little help here. I had my first run of the season back on Memorial Day. Just had service done on boat. After launching I was in no wake mode for about 15 min. When I reached the end of no wake zone I opened her up. After about 3 min my son yelled that he smelled something burning. Crap!!! Killed the throttle and radio and low and behold could hear the temp alarm. Shut down both motors. Smoke was coming from engine compartment. It smelled of burning oil so I vented with blower for a bit before opening engine cover it was just the port engine smoking. So I dropped anchor and started going through the usual suspects, cleanout ports were pulled and checked for debris. Nothing was found. Checked oil level. All good. Restarted engines and checked pissers. All pissing at same rate. Figured it was a hiccup so throttle up slowly. Made it about 500 ft and port alarm went off again. Killed engine, decided this is not a fluke and we have a problem. Let it cool for awhile and started up again. I didn’t have a problem in no wake mode so I tried that. I was able to go about 1500 feet before alarm went off again. So I limped back to ramp in spurts of no wake, anchor, cool, and repeat. After trying some research I found out about intake screens. They seem clear to me. Was also told thermostat however I cannot find anything to tell me where they are located. So very long story short can someone help me locate the thermostats on a 2012 242 limited s.

Did they overfill the oil on the port engine? If so the air filter may be soaked with oil.

The oil was just over full mark. Can that cause overheating? I will check my air filter. I would think a clogged air filter would only affect the combustion and not have to do with cooling.

Update… so it looks like it is going to be a long process. When I said I checked out cooling intake strainers I was looking at wrong thing. I found the strainers or what’s left of them. The previous owner cut them out, presumably for more flow is the only thing I can think of. I want to scream. Most likely culprit is that I sucked something up and hopefully just clogged a line but the way this season is going it’s problems in the engine. I am going to attempt to attach picture of this geniuses handiwork. Should’ve bought new.
