Been having some issues with our plugs not keeping water in the tubes. Tried limping by with the Vaseline trick to try and get them to seal, sometimes it would work sometimes it wouldn't. Surfing was where we could tell a huge difference, the starboard motor would cavitate bad. I went ahead and purchased the rebuilds for the new plugs and man what a difference. I could tell immediately the difference. No more struggle to come out of the water ballasted and jumps on plane quick when not ballasted. So if your plugs do not hold water on top of the plugs I would bet that you are getting a little cavitation and they need rebuilt as well.

Interesting. What is your hypothesis?

With the plugs not sealing, you are introducing air into the intake tunnel causing cavitation. Air causes cavitation and thus my impellers were slipping. Once I took that out of the equation my boat was back to normal.

Guess the new design is not as flawless as we were hoping for.

Interesting, didn't realize they even offered rebuild kits for the new style plugs. My starboard one isn't holding water anymore, but no performance issues to speak of.

Not flawless but much better then the the 2nd gen plugs.
