Please vote so we can get data on those affected or not.

If you vote yes please specify:
  • Year and Model of boat
  • Engine build date
  • Warranty was valid at the time or not
  • How Yamaha handled your issue or not
  • Hours on engine(s) when the timing chain broke

Are any of the 1.8L engines piston timed?

This poll is about the 1.8L engines. I noticed you have an older 2 stroke boat. Did you also have a PWC or newer boat with a 1.8L that suffered a broken timing chain? If not would you mind removing your vote so that it doesn't skew the results? Thanks.

This poll is about the 1.8L engines so I'm not sure why you cast your vote since you have the older boat. Did you have a PWC or newer boat with a 1.8L that suffered a broken timing chain? If not would you mind removing your vote so that it doesn't skew the results? Thanks.
I’m not sure if I read the thread/question wrong or if it was edited. I was unaware at the time of my vote that only 1.8 engines were at question.

Are you now including or excluding PWC? The poll question does not specify. But your first post seems to indicate boats only.

I had initially clicked no as my boat has no timing chains to break. But I then realized that would also be an invalid response. Would you rather I skew the results to no? I don’t see a way to remove my vote.

People don’t think internet polls be like they is; but they do.

I only edited the title to add 1.8L. The poll questions always mentioned the 1.8L but maybe I wasn't being clear enough so my apologies. Not possible to edit poll questions after the thread has been submitted. I can only add more questions lol.

I wasn't intending to add PWC's. Only reason I brought it up was because you voted so I figured maybe you had one at one time :). PWC's Tend to be driven much harder and stay in the air more than boats typically do. I am more concerned with boat owner data than PWC but if someone had one break they can certainly vote. I think most on here are boat owners anyways so doubtful we will have a lot of PWC voters.

I’m reluctant to vote no since I don’t want to jinx myself. :)

So I’ll let the two stroke guys vote count for my “no”

Wouldn’t want to mess with the methodology like that. What if I was to stop posting and then you had a failure? You wouldn’t be able to change our vote.

Maybe @Administrative can help. Apparently one of the goderators changed the responses on a poll I recently started. Maybe they can also edit the results and delete my vote. The mod never said anything to me so I’m not sure who it was.

Revise thread title, added more poll options, allowed for up to 3 answers to be made. Please include the year of your boat in the poll. If anyone would like additional poll responses added let me know and I'll add them.

Prior to my purchase of the boat (2015 AR240) it had the starboard engine replaced under the OEM warranty due to a failed timing chain. It was somewhere between 40 and 50 hours. I found this out from the dealer when I had my YES warranty transfered. I had purchased used through a non-Yamaha dealer so wasn't aware prior to the purchase.

Voted 2015 and older, no breaks. Also I’m at 163 hours both engines.

2010 Yamaha Ar240, about 400 hours on both engines, no timing chain problems.
I think it is overhyped, not really concerned about the timing chains.
Boat still running great.
Thank you for making this poll, good job, important information.

Broken timing chain both engines, on two separate watersports charter AR242's around 1800hrs we now do new timing chains at 1500hrs (about 2 summers of 7 days a week)
