So I decided to crawl under the boat today to have a look at the intake grates and impellers, I'm a little concerned about the starboard side as it appears some of the hull material seems to be missing.

I've never seen the chrome D/S shield type tube thingies before and just need to know if I have a serious issue or is there a simple repair?

I believe it may be the shroud or sleeve that goes around the shaft.

It appears to me that it was coated like this from the factory. The white gelcoat is purely cosmetic and is not sealing the hull around the black plastic thru-hull piece.

Is this a 230 Challenger?

The title made me think, too much information, it's not that kind of forum.

Anyway, I don't recognize the shaft hull connection in your pic. I assume in your pic the engine is on the other side of the hull and that the shaft housing goes all the way to the impeller.

Can you post another pic which includes the surrounding area?

How deep are the black patches?

He's a pic showing more:

Ok, I've never seen a shaft protector in full like that and until now thought that was a new feature only found on new brp spin offs like the chapparal. My two cents is that if you are not having cavitation issues because of the missing material and the "damage" is not deep I would not mess with it. You could always patch/smooth the black/flaky areas with 4200 or gel coat repair but the area isn't all that smooth to begin with where the lip of the shaft protector / flange and screws are concerned.

On a side note, I think the twig near the impeller would cause cavitation problems in my boat.

Hmmm...that doesn't look stock to me. Maybe that has been repaired in the past. Looks like they just covered it in marinetex or 5200.

I must say the title of this thread caught my eye please forgive my dirty mind this morning ! :)

It's not a twig, it's a dry piece of lake weed.

I found this which leads me to believe it's stock:
