So it’s been a while since I posted anything significant here but that and what’s happened since are stories for another time and mostly place. Fast forward to the present, my son recently graduated college and just landed a job at Lake Powell. He was thinking of getting a used jetski to explore the lake with. I ended up getting him a non running jet boat instead. Now I’m trying to restore it, quickly.

What’s wrong with it? mainly that the ecu / mpem is fried. I may send the original to Carmo for possible repair but I’m running against the clock so purchased a used one on line (it is returnable / refundable but I hope I won’t need to do that). The interior is shot and the decals faded. It doesn’t have batteries and is missing the console /only storage box. On the plus side the carbs were rebuilt last year, it was idling (on a Jump pack not a battery) when the ecu fried and the compression of each cylinder on both sides motors came back at between 180 and 210.

As for the trailer, its needs tlc as well. The tires are old and cracking at the side walls (only pressurized to 40 of the recommended 90 psi), some lights are missing and so is the connection to the tow vehicle (the seller included and mounted a magnetic set on for me to get home on). Also the trailer jack is about to die, feels like one of the gears is missing teeth. Finally the winch is shot, we found this out on the way home from the purchase, the gear the latch mates to is rusted and missing teeth and the latch is not lined up with the gear (check out my ghetto / field repair in the pics).

What have I done in the first week since I bought the boat? I washed it, removed the stereo and four speakers, starred at it a while before I started throwing more money at it in the form of purchasing parts. So far the ecu cost more than the boat and trailer combined.

Here is what I have purchased / have for it so far, aside from the ecu:
Upholstery skins, Hydro turf / blacktip deck mats,
New decals, batteries, Marine Stereo and four speakers,Towable cover, Storage compartment,
Four popup cleats and grab bars from a Yamaha jet boat, yellow paint for plastic and 3 gallons of xps 2 stroke oil.

For the trailer I got:
A new winch, trailer jack, lights, guide posts and self retracting transom straps. I haven’t got new tires yet as I need to research how much larger I can go on a 12” rim.

Sounds like quite the project @Ronnie. I'll be following with interest. Best of luck.

I have a 2009 Speedster 155. Fun little boat.

You might see if https://lakesidetech.biz/ can work on your ECU. He specializes in Ficht systems, don't know about others.

If you get in a real bind, I have a Yamaha Exciter 270 for sale.

What engines are in that? 2 657 2strokes?
If so an almost perfect compression reading would be 150psi
125 to 150 is a good engine

I think the speedster got the twin 787's. Sadly I know A LOT about those motors as my XP 800 has one. (edit: Nope they got the 717's/720's...those motors are ROCK solid reliable)

Those MPEMs/ECU's for the boats are near unobtanium, so I'm kind of surprised you found one.

It has two 717 cc motors. All the parts but the MPEM/exu which is supposed to be delivered tomorrow.

Since I initially posted, I have removed all the decals and the two remaking grab handles that had frozen mounting bolts. On the trailer I replaced the winch, trailer jack and installed one of the boat guides. Not much but the decal removal took a few hours with an eraser wheel plus the battery on my dermel died before I could finish cutting the handles / mounting bolts off.

Attached are a few more pics.

Finally, I’ve developed a plan B just in case I can’t get the boat done and tuned before my son leaves for lake powell. That is, my wife and I plan to deliver the boat to him in Powell. This might turn into plan A. We planned to visit him anyway but flying is … we have two choices, fly into salt lake round trip for about $350 each and drive 5 hours to Powell Or fly into a closer airport for at least $700 each and drive three hours to Powell. Driving from California would take 15 hours per Google Maps.

I painted the rub rail, console/dash.
soon I will be installing keel guard,
hydro turf, upholstery and decals among other things like a sound system, pop up cleats.

The trailer upgrades (new tires and rims, jack, winch. Guide posts and lighting) are all but done, just need to pick up a spare tire and mount. IMG_1217.jpegIMG_1206.jpegIMG_1217.jpeg

Blacktip is good cheap flooring. Actually good cheap stuff, period, for seadoo's. I have a blacktip seat cover on my 1996 and have had it for 10+ years. 20240826_121517.jpg

I’ve accomplished a few things since my last update. Most notably installed four pop up cleats, stereo, speakers and new hood struts and sound deadening foam on the engine cover/tray. I also prepped the seat cushions for new skins and installed new lights on the trailer.

I still need to install the new skins, traction mats and decals among a few other things
