As we were going through a narrow no wake channel today, this guy in a brand spankin' new Cobalt comes beside at a high speed. He semi-yells that my boat must be taking on water. WTH. Scared me silly. My wife started to freak out. He told me that I have water coming out of the hole on the side of my boat and it had been coming out for awhile. Ha, I told him that I have jets and that is how they work. He was blown away that they were jets. He probably could of bought 2 Yamahas for the price of his Cobalt :).

I am sure that I'll get other people saying the same thing in the future, so now I can comfortably answer their warnings. Just wanted to share this for any other new jet boaters and that you may get some warnings from others.

It was an incredible day on the water in Northern Illinois. Another nice day tomorrow. Hope you guys are having some nice weather as well.

Wonderful weather but gotta do my maintenance and cleaning first!

I love that jets are still such a mystery to 90% of the population. Like really?

@Speedling, I paid the storage place $100 to do the maintenance ... and I'm gonna clean (the interior) on the water - hopefully tomorrow, or Monday. It seems like it's our first dry AND warm day of the season here!

The water coming out of the tell-tales does look like bilge output to the uninitiated. In my area, there are very very few Yamahas on the water. I've seen maybe 5 or 6 on my lake in the 4 years I've had the boat so far. Compare that to how many stern drives and inboards there are on the water and its little wonder that these boats are a bit of a mystery.

I had a semi - similar experience a few years ago. Just left the no wake zone and was cruising along blasting the tunes and generally just enjoying the ride when another boater tried to catch up to me and flagged me down waving frantically. When I slowed down to let him catch up and get beside me he told me that I had left a fender out on the port side. really, he got me out of my groove and raised my blood pressure for that? The thing is I knew the fender was out as I asked my family to leave it out since we were not going far before having to dock again and it wasn't hurting anything (e.g. Dragging in the water putting strain on the cleat or bouncing against the hull). Better safe than sorry and the guy was just trying to be helpful but ....

When I had my Sea Ray the last couple of years, I don't ever remember seeing a jet boat and never noticed a boat with water coming out of the side hole. I am a pretty observant (my wife calls me a "freak") boater as well. So I agree that most people are still not initiated with what a jet boat looks while underway. But you know what, I do appreciate people giving a heads up if they see something strange.

Ronnie, your fender story was funny. Now if that would have been a cement block hanging off your boat, I get it. :) But again, having a few of those Type A micro boaters around is not a horrible thing. They will just scare you sometimes as our natural reaction is oh %$#@, what's wrong.

Enjoy your day on the water today if you guys are heading out today.
