timing chain failed, waiting on new motor

I have been lurking and reading all about the timing chain failure problems about the earlier models of motors. As my luck would have it, we broke our timing chain earlier and I've been waiting for a motor at our boat repair shop. With the coronavirus upon us, I'm being told that the repair shop is having to wait on the motor because of the plant being shut down. Has anyone else heard of this, and if so, does anyone have any ideas of when they might start making motors again? Im told that the plant is in Florida, if that helps.

SBT is a shop in Florida that does a lot of rebuilds. But a timing chain failure 'should' be provided free by Yamaha, not a 3rd party rebuild.

Hey noggs, any update on your issue? our 2013 sx190 with 70 hours on it just snapped its timing chain this week out on Powell leaving our family with small children stranded for a bit. Im pissed!

2014+ they changed TC to the beefier chain.
My engine is torn down for blown head gasket and replacing TC to same older 3/4 link as I would have to change cams and crank gear if I wanted updated 5/4 TC

Hey, actually I tried reaching out to Yamaha, no response back. We ended up paying for a new motor and then corona hit, the dealership didn’t know when the motor would even be in, so we ended up buying a new pontoon.

How can you tell if you have the older or newer timing chain? I have a 2015 212X and the thought of having a failure and losing a motor scares the hell out of me

@Kennytwo Older have a 4/3 link; newer have a 5/4 link.

They fixed most all SVHO skis which accounted for almost all of the failures, and the problem (almost) went away. It was very rare in HOs. All new (past 7/15) production 1.8s have the beefier TC and tensioners .

Nothing you can do but run it.
The NA don't suffer from failures like the SHO or SVHO of similar years.

There's a thread poll on 1.8 NA TC failures. You always hear of the ones that go bad vs number of no failures....

My guess was a bad batch of chains and they are not every engine got the bad ones. All they know is the majority of the bad chains were in 14/15 boats and waverunners.
But regardless there has been chain failures prior to 14 and after 15 even in the 5 link chains
