I had a diiferent issue a few weeks ago with my 2012 ram at 42k miles. I got the "hemi tick" caused by broken exhaust manifold bolts. Somewhat common on the 5.7l hemis. My cost was two days without my truck and zero dollars as it was covered under the power train warranty.
Just goes to show that nearly all brands have their issues. Pistons at 39k miles is a bit concerning though. Hopefully Chevy treats you just as good. Thinking about a new GMC Sierra Denali for my next truck so please do update on how they treated this and the cause.

I have had the hemi tick on two dodge engines... the first wad a 2007 with the 4.7 litter (which was developed first as the hemi but they decided to go with a larger display ement engine for the badge) and my current work horse 2005 durango with the 5.7.. the 5.7 was only noticeable by me because I know my vehicles... it was a quick fix.. it wad at 100K miles. If that's it... I'm happy with it.
Yes Oil consumption. They said it was caused by the rings sticking. Replaced for N/C at the stealership. I have other vehicles so I didnt mind being with out it for a few days.
A lot of manufacturers are having issues with oil consumption... Honda, GM, Toyota, and many others. Its only a few that are covering it under warranty. I do all the Toyota rebuilds at my dealer that come through. It all boils down to very weak rings. Most likely to improve fuel economy.
A friend of mine had one. The did a bunch of work and it still had excessive oil consumption. Chevy ended up doing a total rebuild. He had to stop by the Chevy garage every week for them to check the oil. They gave him free oil and oil changes till they worked it out. The whole process took about two years before it was all sorted out.
I had a 2008 Avalanche with no issues. Put about 90k miles on it before I traded it in on my current 2013 Sierra, which has the same engine with 54k on it and no issues....(knocks on wood)
Truck is back and this is what they wrote, Found oil 1.5 qts low, last service was over 1.5 qts low. Removed all 8 pistons found oil rings on 6 of 8 pistons stuck also ring gaps alin wrong.Removed and replaced all 8 pistons and ring assembly bla bla bla
