I have a Shorelander trailer this is the first time I am doing the bearings. This is a picture of the rear bearing and some sort of spring liner. I assume that it is broken do I need a new bearing or a new spring liner? What is its purpose?

I don't see a picture @Sacamano but it sounds like you're describing a grease seal which keeps the grease inside the hub. If it is broken or has come apart you would need to replace it.

Sounds like the rear grease seal. If you have the bearings out, I would replace it for sure...It's cheap.

Look like this?

I had a custom trailer and it had E-z lube spindles. Awesome, you could do a complete grease change with just a grease gun.

Every trailer should have them.

Yes it does. Here is the broken one. I picked up a replacement bearing set and replaced both bearings and the seal. I left the spring (don't know what the proper term is) around the rubber seal as is shown in your picture. I placed the packed inner bearing in the hub and pounded the seal into the hub. Is this correct? When I took the old one out, the spring was in the gap of the bearing.

Oh and I have seen the those e-z lubes. They look slick as dog snot.

Here's a video of someone doing the whole thing...
Should pretty much answer any questions you might have. It's not our trailer, but the same basic spindle and axle. Bearings are at 11 minutes, seals at 12:15.
