VHF Radio install

Nice! I'm considering one now, which model did you do with?

I'm leaning towards the GX1400GB. The 1800 adds the mapping features which is nice, but doubt I would ever use it and debating if it's worth the extra real estate.

Hey slick, I bought the GX1800G, dust cover and external antenna from the GPS Store. I wouldn’t be hesitant because of the size. The 1800 is pretty small. If you haven’t seen one West Marine may have one on display to check out. I don’t think there was a significant difference in cost between the 1400 and 1800. I have two full featured Raymarine’s in my big boat. I felt uncomfortable not having a fixed mount, full featured radio on my AR190. Either one would be a good choice. It’s just important that you have one out there.

I've seen a few installs in that location, so no issues with hitting your leg or knee?

I thinks it’s the best place on my AR190. No room up top. In some heavy chop I may bump it. But just sitting there I don’t have a problem with it. I didn’t, nor did my dealer have a better solution if I wanted to keep it conveniently located within arms reach. Maybe you have some more room on your dash on your 21 footer. Let me know what you come up with.

Thanks...I think its the best spot. I don't like anything on the dash. Also the antenna looks pretty sleek there...Good job!

@bigwaves I see you have the GX1800G. Currently I have two Standard Horizon HX890GP. I want to just keep one in the boat and I am considering the GX1800G for something permanent that doesn't bounce around. It looks like you are happy with it?

Also for anyone else is there something else that I could look at? I am going to do a permanent install and mount the antennae, I like how @bigwaves has it done a lot.

Was about to order it but was looking for some additional confirmation.

Being on the Great Lakes, wanted to make sure I had the 25w just in case.

Additionally, I have an MMSI number through U.S. Boat. I only registered it on one of the HX890's. Can you actually assign the MMSI number to more than one VHF on the same boat?

@HangOutdoors, yes I’m very happy with the install of my radio. I haven’t tried it out yet so I can’t comment on the performance. The install was done after my dealer did the 10 hour service and winterization back in November. I left the choice of antenna and antenna mount up to my dealer’s installation technician. I stay near the shore while out in the bay and most of my time is spent on the rivers and creeks off the bay so maximum range was not the number one priority thus mounting lower, on the hull, versus high up on the tower works for my needs. Also, I can leave the antenna up when the boat gets put back up on the high and dry rack at the end of the day.
