Weekend Wrapup Labor Day Weekend Edition

Hope everyone had a nice, long weekend!

Friday, took the day off to make a four day weekend. Was planning on some boating at Cheat Lake but it was just too cold. 53 degrees in the morning and only up to about 65 later in the afternoon and overcast. Started winding things up for fall and getting ready for our trip this coming weekend to Madison WI for the Ironman (our kid is doing the full Ironman).

Saturday, went to a garage sale. They had an SX190 for sale, hehe. I told them about the site but they are moving into a pontoon. Got another coat of Sunny Dry on the cistern at a second house that we have. Got in a 3 mile walk with the mrs.

Sunday, 3 mile walk with the mrs then off to a friends Labor Day picnic for a couple hours. Not too much after that.

Monday, scrambled to finish everything up that needed done before leaving this Thursday for Madison. We had our semi-annual pool opening/closing argument then a 3 mile walk with the mrs along with the dog. Whipped up a double dog food bowl holder for my kid.

That's about it and again a no boating weekend Dang! A fast four days.

Friday 5th grade orientation in the "remolded" school for our daughter. Then the 3.5 hour drive to the camp. Shrimp boil for dinner with family.

Saturday, out on the lake for a couple few hours, only about 70 out, did ski for the first time this year, had to get 1 lap in. Pulled the floating trampoline and washed.

Sunday rained all day. Few odd jobs inside and out between the showers.

Monday, pulled the dock to the cove for winter, and lifted the walkway onto shore. Took the pontoon boat out and washed. Deflated and put the tubes and trampoline in the basement. stacked the kneeboards, skis etc in the corner as well. Quick 3.5 hour drive back home, and prep for the first day of school.

2.5 days of boating and water sports. Hopping between five-six different ski/wake boats all weekend. Bull Shoals Lake. 85deg weather. Total walking distance: approx. 50 yards, back and forth to the dock, twice a day.

Picked up the boat Saturday from service. Sunday weather wasn't looking to great but we went out anyways - ended up being a beautiful day and was on the water from 11ish to 9ish. Did brunch and dinner by boat, and hung out at an island for a little while. On our way to dinner, we had a pack of dolphins following us and got some good video of them jumping out of the water.... we were in a minimum wake zone but they probably would have loved it if I could really gave them some wake.

The wife and I attended the Sheboygan County Fair on Friday night with another couple. My buddy and I made it clear to our wives that this was a double-date, just not the kind they thought it was. This wasn't me and my wife taking him and his wife. This was he and I allowing the ladies to tag along. The evening was nearly cut short by a call from the plant with some PLC problems. Fortunately I had forgotten to remove my laptop bag from my vehicle. So I hopped on my phone's hot-spot and saved the day from the parking lot.

We watched some dogs jumping for distance into a big pool; caught the tail-end of the pig and duck races; checked out all manner of tractors, mowers, trailers, and ATVs that were up for sale; and topped the whole thing off with some unhealthy Fair Food (including deep-fried Oreo cookies of course).


I practiced "Gun Control" by not buying another one. (Fleet Farm had a Ruger LC9 S on sale and I was REALLY thinking about it for my first carry gun.)


Earlier in the week I had determined that my push-mower wasn't starting due to a sheared off flywheel key. I destroyed the flywheel attempting to pull it with a regular puller. (Hey dummy - see those holes? That's how you get it off. ) A new flywheel is about $70 but I found a used one on e-bay shipped to my house for $20. The mailman walked up to me with the package about 2 seconds after I had pulled the remnants of the old one off and tossed it in the garbage. The timing was so good it was laughable.


Being on-call, boating wasn't an option so I spent the remainder of the weekend continuing work on my basement shop/garage reorganization projects. I have under 2 months to have my garage ready to accept both vehicles so I gotta get 'er done. (Halloween is my personal deadline for having them both parked snugly in the garage - I hate scraping the frost off of windows.) Pegboard was added to another location in my shop and a small steel Craftsman workbench was re-located to the garage to allow more room for moving things around down there. That bench will ultimately tuck up against the wall and hold my "special garage tools" like bearing race driver set, fuel line removal set, pullers (along with my newly acquired harmonic balancer/flywheel puller), bearing seal removal tool, metal taps, metal vice, etc. I'll put some peg-board on the wall over it and have a full compliment of "garage" hand tools readily accessible on the wall.

I've been in that house for 19 years and feel like I'm finally "moving in" to my shop and garage. I put off setting up proper storage for things for so long that I hit the "rollover point" where I could barely work in my basement shop because I had to keep moving things around every time I wanted to perform a different operation. My Dad's passing in 2010 added to the problem when I brought home a bunch of his tools and equipment that I didn't have room for. I'm working through this all in stages (pictures to come) and I know it will get re-done as I decide what works and doesn't work, but at least things are finally getting cleaned up an organized in my work areas.

As far as the boat goes, the long-term forecast doesn't look like much. I'm seriously considering pulling the pin on this 3-trip season and stuffing her into "winter storage" position so that I can get on with the business of preparing for w...w....w... No. I'm not going to say it, but you know: That season that comes after autumn.

Refereed 4 football games, looked longingly at the boat, mowed the lawn! No boating, no BBQ, nothing fun at all!

Scuba diving(on a charter boat) the Tenaco Towers (sunken oil derrick) near Ft. Lauderdale on Saturday 101 foot depth first dive, Giant Goliath Grouper 300lbs + and five nurse sharks laying on the bottom, several lionfish, forgot my spear. 2nd Dive spot 2 98ft depth another Goliath Grouper more nurse sharks, eerie gloom that deep really awesome. Sunday took the boat out off in Biscayne bay, daughter rode the kneeboard, pretty good for not riding in five years, I rode a wakeboard, not bad for an old man who hasn't done it in 5 years as well. Nice calm day on the bay, lots of fun, washed the boat and put her away. Monday, prep for Freakin IRMA now I gotta get the house done and hitch the boat and try to get out of here before the storm hits. Pray for all of us here in SoFLO...........

Friday, Saturday, & Sunday - we had three of our Grandkids with us as our Daughter In Law was out of town and our Son had to work his 12 hours shifts this weekend. Monday we took the Corvette on a road trip up here in Northern Arizona, no boating for us - we have only taken the boat out twice, plan on a Lake Havasu trip in a couple of weeks and then put the boat up for the fall/winter.

@jcyamaharider is everyone in this picture with a double anchor? I just started boating in places with sand bars and haven't been totally sure how to approach it. I do not have a keel guard yet so that has also stopped me. Any suggestions? I also have a set of fins that I would be worried about since they hang lower, but maybe I'm crazy!

Yes everyone has double anchors. I use a fortress fx-7 on the front and I have a shore spike anchor on the rear. We had those boats in the water for 2 nights like that.
