Just saying if I'm looking for a new boat. What years should I stay away from?

I would buy any year 240 this issue is bigger in the supercharged engines. They did change the chain in the 16's but overal it's a very small percentage of non supercharged 1.8's that have had this happen.

And i believe it is changable with a kit.
Decent amount of work but managable once it's out of the boat i am sure.

It's pretty much every 1.8 boat besides 2016. That being said it's a small %, just about any vehicle you buy is going to give you similar miniscule odds off some kind of engine failure.

I believe that is correct as far as NON-supercharged 1.8s are concerned - the numbers of timing chain failures have been so small that the issue would likely never come to light if it was not for the supercharged versions.

The SVHO engines (used in skis exclusively, thus far) are a different story altogether. In 2014 and the first half of 2015 SVHOs reported TC failure rates have been rows of magnitude higher than any other 1.8 engine issues. Notably, these SVHO engines produce incredible torque and at least a third more power than N/A. While many internals were upgraded from the get-go, timing chains were not (same as in N/A engines).

I think it is hard to get a good idea of the scope of the potential problem in SHO boats, as there numbers are very small, as compared to all other 1.8 boats and skis. But it may be a more significant issue, albeit certainly not as dramatic as the SVHO. Time will tell in that case, unless anyone has the numbers (for SHO boats).
