Came up with a solution for our free air subs
I built a small box and attached it to back side of the speaker
What a difference! Deeper base for sure!

I would have to measure for you....
It's a full box I built with a circle hole in front I cut.
I use longer screws that held the speaker in and drilled the longer screws into the box to hold in place.
I also added a brace in the back of the box to the bumps don't add stress to the front panel.
The box sits off the floor about 2 or 3 inches
I was trying to buy a box, but my speaker is mount to high to fit a premade box. IMG_1024.JPG

So I guess the ultimate question is how does it sound?

@Drift Away it sound 10 times better, I am now able to feel the base as before you would hear the bass but you wouldn't actually feel the vibration. I am so happy I have the jl audio sub volume control mounted at the helm So I can actually turn it down when wifey is aboard.

@Benny Sibbitt so you have a IB sub but you put it in a box to make it louder? If you had to do it again would you just buy the JL sub that's made to put in a box? I'm getting ready to buy a sub and am trying to figure out if I should buy the IB sub or the regular one. I like the way you installed yours and am thinking about doing the same thing. Can you get the dimensions of that box when you get a chance?

I think the holes help let some air more around and worse case its a vent for under that seat. I like it so much i did it twice. 20170204_153304.jpg 20170204_153304.jpg

Yes I put in a box to make louder and a deeper base, yes if I had to do again I would of bought a speaker that is designed to be boxed - which I may switch after a testing on a few boat runs. I was going to add a second speaker in a box like others have done but since I already have the hole cut with a speaker I figure I would try to make it sound better first.
Yes I will get size soon for you. If I had to guest the face and back is 11 1/4 x 16 x 15"

I'm no expert, but maybe @David Analog can chime in. If you read JL's website the IB sub requires 2-2.5 cu ft of space. That's a pretty big box. The regular sub requires somewhere around 1 cu ft. So what happens if you put an IB sub in a smaller enclosure? That's what I'm trying to figure out. @Benny Sibbitt seems to be having good results doing so.

My boxes are right at 1.5 ft and the box adds so much bass and bottom end to the JL subs

This is fact. When you place a true high 'Q' infinite baffle subwoofer driver in a box that is small enough that it serves to raise the 'Qtc' (system 'Q'), you lose deep bass and you add a midbass hump...in other words, you get more of a domed response curve. The smaller the box the more profound the change. So it is definitely adding a midbass peak, but not at the deeper registers. If you want to go acoustic suspension, which does have some advantages, simply select the right subwoofer driver for the right application. JL Audio makes such a driver, the M10W5.
