For a used boat try to get something with under 200 hrs. The general appearance will give you an idea of how the boat was maintained. Burned out vinyl corroded jet nozzles are signs of lazy maintanence. Depending on your location fresh water vs. salt water will make a difference the trailer will have a lot of corrosion if used in salt water . It may not even have the original trailer. Good luck on your search the last two boats I sold buyers traveled 300 - 400 miles . I enjoy working ,maintaining , modifying and detailing the boat

I will be buying a new home on the water in the Saint James City, Fla area and won't need a trailer but would need it delivered to my dock:)
The new ones have some nice Nav controls touch screens for stuff. Maybe I will find a good deal on a new one. Will have to keep
my eyes open in the future when I get ready for one.

As for model years, take a look at the model comparison spreadsheet in the sticky on this site. It helped me decide quickly what was going to be in our budget, then searched from there.

Here are the cliff notes of the major differences.

2015+ was a new hull design and articulating keel. There were also various differences in electronics going forward.
2012/13/14 had the tip down tower, but otherwise mostly the same as the 2010 and 2011
2010-2011 had the fixed tower
2010 was the first year of the 242/242LS. New hull shape over the 232/232LS. 2010 had some engine issues. Do a quick search here as they are solid if it was addressed. Someone else can correct me, was it motor mounts and one other issue?

2010 had some engine issues.
Oil cooler bolts sheering.
No engine issues with 1.8s, other than the infamous timing chain issue that affects 1.8 engines built pre-7/15 (?) engine production date - very rare occurrence, generally covered by Yamaha both in- and out- of warranty but it can ruin a season.

That's right, it made me want to avoid a 2010 if it had not been addressed specifically.

I am one of those guys that lusted after a 242 the day they first showed them in fall of 2009. But the pricing is hard to justify in our short MN summers. (non-winters) But when the 2015 was released, the originals started to take a dive towards that 30K mark. And most recently we have seen them drop below 30K based on condition. That was when I started truly shopping them.

There are plenty out there with minimal hours. As not every boater can commit to using it on a regular basis. So don't go crazy on one with 200+ hours. As sub 100hr boats are around and in that great price range.

I will warn you though, Yamaha is notorious for releasing new models without changing the name. And thus the MSRP keeps going up as the new features are worth it. They should have almost gone to 243LS in 2015 with all those changes.

But owners of previous years get it in their head that their 2010-2014 is appreciating in value! This is no lie, and boat trader and Pop yachts will reflect this nonsense. They will actually advertise above MSRP when it was new. So keep that spreadsheet handy when shopping and refer to the original MSRP when new. It never sold for more than that number.

Don't be afraid of anything with leftover YES contracts on them. The YES follows the VIN/Hull ID and not the owner. Good to know and have.

Keep in mind hours refer to engine hours!
Yamaha 1.8s can go without any rebuilds, just regular maintenance, for over 2,000 hours. Those engines are usually the least problematic part of YJB buying.
On the other hand, I've seen plenty "low hours" boats that looked like they have been sitting on sand bars or in the water for THOUSANDS OF HOURS, lol.

Also for service can most marine shops work on these or do they have to do to a Jet Dealer. If Im in a area like Saint James City, Fla out on Pine Island
I wonder if marine shops there can work on them since I would not have a trailer. Maybe they would have to come pick it up if it
had to go into town to a dealer for Jet boats????????????? I wonder about that too?????

Put it this way, if you want engine work done, anyone with experience with late model Yamaha Waverunners is what a person would want for a mechanic. The rest of the boat is nothing special that can't be figured out by yourself or any mechanically inclined person.

It's the Yamaha specific components a person worries about. Engines, or electronics in the later models. In that case you may want a Yamaha mechanic. A good service manual will explain most things to anyone that can read.
