It wasn't mentioned in the article, but from what I remember, Yamaha used a fair amount of ceramics in that engine. Nothing screams fragile, like ceramics, but from what I was told, the components were stronger and obviously much lighter, so they were used.

I wish I knew more about what the details were. I just remember back that the talk of the Ceramic Yamaha engine in the SHO was making Ford look good, and nobody knew it.

That's always possible, and even more possible that they shared it with Ford in another model. As they have had a working agreement for many years.

I didn't know that much about those SHO's so thanks for the post @swatski . Did ya'll know that Yamaha also built the 60° angle v8 for the Volvo SUV? I believe it was the XC60 model. I'm not a fan of Volvos so I don't know the details. The new XC90's are pretty sweet though and full of tech.

Yep. I remember this engine. I almost talked my mom into buying a SHO Taurus, circa 1991. Unfortunately, she ended up going with a 4 cylinder powered Camry. Boring, but a fine car in its own niche, which was likely a much better fit for my mom. But that's not the point.

I worked in a ford dealers part room back then and used to cringe when I had to look up parts on them. The service manager was in a SHO club so everyone in the area brought their broken SHO’s to us. I forget the details why it was a pain but I remember it was. The engines in the micro fiche didn’t look normal and some parts had different names and basic part numbers PIA.

Had that same article come across my feed yesterday.

More cool motor goodness under the hood of the SVT Contour years ago. Things like extrude honed intake manifolds, and multi stage intake's were engineering marvels back then.

Pretty normal to find that stuff in just about any car now days.

I’m not 100% sure, but I believe Yamaha also made the 3.4 liter V-8 in the gen 3 SHO. 1996-1999
