@Jim Robeson , not many tourists in Hana! Sure, plenty drive the road to Hana and pass thru occasionally, but they few. Hana is often referred to as Heaven on Earth.

@txav8r ... ever do the bicycle ride down the volcano? I did that the last trip we made, was one of the best excursions on the island. Got to see the sun come up, then coastwe down the mountain. By the time got to the end we were in shorts and t-shirts. Started in jeans, sweatshirt, socks, and a jacket. Just incredible views from there.

We passed through Hana last year, but didn't find a place to stop for lunch like we had hoped. Ended up going back and eating at Mama's Fish House

Looks like you are enjoying yourselves. Great pic.

I used to fly Maui and Honolulu all the time as well as our 6 or 7 vacations to Maui. In my job, I get to see the most incredible sunrises and sunsets from a little higher up than the top of Haleakalā. And while it may be a thrill to coast down a 10,023' volcano hoping the brakes will survive, LOL, I just never saw the thrill in it. So we let the sun coax us out of bed each morning from the waters of Hana bay into our bedroom window. It generally has me up before it even shows a sliver. But from most places on the island, it is a several hour drive before sunset to be there for sunrise. I get the draw for some, just not for me! Too bad you guys didn't stop at either the Hana Ranch restaurant or the Hotel Hana Maui (now the Travaasa Maui), both excellent restaurants and the restaurant at the hotel is 5 star. Mama's is an experience, but it is expensive!!! If we want fish in Paia, we generally go to the Paia Fish Market on the corner of hwy 36 and Baldwin Ave, where the stop light is. Certainly not the atmosphere of Mama's, but not the price either. Nothing beats the atmosphere of our Lanai overlooking Hana Bay. We tend to do things a little different than most that come to Hawaii. We have seen the island and we enjoy the tranquility. But we also hike to the big falls above seven sacred pools a couple of times, go swimming in the pools every other day or so, visit Charles Lindberg's grave, and cook almost all our own meals. It is a wonderful time for us. This year, my brother and sister in law (my wife's brother) are going with us! We have never been on a vacation with anyone so it will be a treat. We have (rented) a nice house on Hana Bay and it will be great!

Dan, enjoy the trip!
