I have watched a few videos on cam timing and I have seen the cylinder opposite the oil tank and the cylinder at the oil tank both used for TDC. I haven't been able to get a definitive answer as to which cylinder to use. Can someone please clarify which one to use. This is for a 2008 SX230 with the MR-1 engines.

Thanks

I may not be able to give you an definitive answer to your questions. But i have gone through the TR1 motor timing chain adjustment process. What is it that you are trying to accomplish? are you trying to verify valve clearance? or are you checking timing mark alignments? if nothing has been done to the motor and you have the valvecovers off. you should be able to turn the crank shaft around to get the overhead cam timing marks to match to there prespecive witness location. Usally one dot on the cam roates around and matches a dot stamed on the carrier. If both cams have match marks that you can align turning the crank to a position and they are both aligned. you could measure with a dial caliper the depth of cylinder to see which one is at TDC. When i was doing some research on cam alignment i would run into videos showing the MR-1 motors #1 cylinder was the farthest on Aft twords the stern, the TR-1 #1 cyliner is the farthes forward twords the bow.

Edit: DO NOT turn the cam by the cam sprocket., use a strap wrench to turn the output coupler.
