All,
Been a yearlong reader of these forums since I purchased my boat about this time in 2018. I grew up with boats (non-jets and mostly outboards), but this is the first one I've ever owned. I've learned a lot from you all but have a couple of issues I'm either trying to remedy or give myself piece of mind.
To provide context:
I keep the boat in a slip all season and take it out every 3 weeks or so to clean. I have a full snap-cover for when not in use, though if it rains heavy I'll see a little water around where you would normally expect to (bimini poles where the cover wraps, etc.), maybe some in the ski locker. I just recently resealed the canvas with starbrite sealant so I hope that will help a bit.
I have installed:
two batteries with switch
float switch on bilge
Cobras - which are great and help a lot with docking and low speed.
Issue 1: While resting in the slip I've notice lean toward port at the back of the boat. It's probably more noticeable to me than anyone else, but still it's noticeable. I don't keep anything heavy in the boat other than the batteries, 6 or so life jackets on the port side, and the box anchor + rope under the starboard bow cushion. Could the two batteries weigh the boat down that much where you would see noticeable lean? I suppose it's about 100 pounds or so in total. I understand that the boat itself is light, so I may be answer my own question. I just want to be sure that the lean isn't related to another issue.
2. I've attached a pic with a circled area of the transom. What is this? Function? When I was cleaning the boat last weekend I found, what I think was, a sealant ring that had detached from this area and become lodged in the opening. It's was a light gummy rubber substance. I assume this is the sealant from whatever this valve is and not lake trash, but I guess I could be wrong??? Any thoughts here?
3. I know this is a long-debated issue in this forum, but when I take the boat out of the water there is always a prolonged drainage from the hull plugs (and much much more from the port hull plug). The bilge hardly every kicks on and stays relatively dry when in the water. Have we found any way to alleviate this? Is it a significant problem? I remember reading somewhere - either here or another forum - that one of the issues is that the bilge pump does not dive deep enough to pump out the water where those hull plugs are located. There's some sort of chamber underneath the bilge that stores water to a point and then the bilge takes over. That would mean that some water simply never leaves the boat unless the plugs are out on the trailer... Is this correct? Is a change of plugs to stainless or brass a solution?
I asked the dealer to look at issue 3 last year when I took it in for winterization and service. They could not find any leaks.
I wonder if it's possible that 1 and 3 are related somehow?
At any rate, thank you for any help or thoughts!
