Newer to the boating community and eager to learn.
I have a lot of automotive mechanical background which I'm sure some of that knowledge will help with a boat.

I'm looking to get as much real world info of the 2014 Yamaha 212SS as possible.
Any known issues to look out for?
Searching through Yamaha 1812cc HO engine info is somewhat disconcerting and most of the posts seem to not be from the boat side, just the waverunner side.
Are the HO motors in the boats the exact same?
Are they also known to break timing chains in the 212SS?

Any other items to look out for (big or small) would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much!

2014 would fall into the timeframe of the highest rate of timing chain failures. But to be realistic, the amount of failures compared to boats sold were low enough that no official recall was done. And the technical service bulletin had Yamaha repair them for the original owners.

My suggestion would be to get an estimate on the cost to do the update before failure, and the potential cost of repair after the failure and keep that in mind when cutting the deal. Knowing that it may not fail, but you won't have a surprise if it does.

Otherwise that is a rock solid boat, and one of the fastest of all yamaha models. Good luck,

I have a 2013 212SS which is practically the same boat - absolutely love it.
With proper routine maintenance (very minimal) it should be trouble free and a blast to drive.
Once you get over the initial learning curve of steering a jet boat vs stern drive, you will find it is easy to maneuver at both low speed and full throttle (55 mph).
If new to jet boating, Thrust Vector Fins make slow speed maneuvering even easier.
There is a separate section in this forum for 21 footers under “Model Specific Discussions” - be sure to check it out if you haven’t already.
Feel free to reach out with questions anytime.
Welcome to the family.
