My dealer urged me to use a certified dealer for first oil change so as not to have any engine warranty issues, is that crazy talk? It definitely ain't cheap through a dealer (not the dealer I purchased from). If your friend's not going through a dealer with the first one, how will he (or I, if I don't go through the dealer) prove the oil was changed at the appropriate time?
1 - It is illegal to have a dealer be the only way to get service that is warranty-certified (cars, trucks, boats, whatever). There are laws that forbid such practices. As others have stated, receipts of purchase are key to a warranty claim but mainly if they are disputing basic care for an item. Larger insurance companies are better than small ones. Small ones (like add on warranties for used vehicles) will go to fine print to say you have to have the work done by certified mechanics (but still never say you must go to a specific place), large companies (like Y.E.S. plans) do not.
2 - If the first oil change was so vital, how were the rest, not? Absolutely bull-sh...
3 - Proving timeliness of service is with record keeping. A simple log book backed up with receipts is all that's needed. If they get sticky with that, then they must feel there is a lubrication-caused issue and want to be SURE you did the work when required. Honestly even a dealership can just SAY they did the service. Who's to know they really did? Does everyone check their dipsticks for clean oil before driving off? Or mark their oil filters to see if they were replaced?
