Looks like Grand Cherokee 4X4 2 row Overland or Summit is rated 7200.

252 SE loaded (trailer, gas), etc) should be around 6500-6700max.
On paper looks fine. Have couple friends that tow similar boats with Audi Q7 rated 7000 and older Grand Cherokee rated at 6200 or 6500.
Not planning to have it a daily towing rig but may be occasional long trips to other states/lakes.

It can probably do it. Can it do it safely? That’s the million dollar question. You’ll probably be at its max 7200 when you count your cargo capacity as well; everyone’s body weight, all the stuff you’re hauling in the jeep, etc.

wife has a 21 jgcl (3-row, v8, 4x4, overland) for occasionally tow duty. my boat (2019 ar240, loaded/full about 6000lbs?) is a bit lighter, but it pulls it well and feels stable. she follows me on the highway when i'm pulling 5th wheel, no issues.
payload sticker on door says 1100lbs...but it has a 6900 gvwr and jeep says it weighs 5350, not sure where the rest goes?
you'd have to calc your tongue wt/payload. do you know if the newer boats follow shorelander's 5-7% tongue wt recommendation (so a max of 470)?

It will do it... But you're basically looking at needing it to be empty to be "safe". Keep in mind you're talking about allowing 500 pounds for occupants, snacks, water, beer, and all the other stuff you'd be bringing with you on the trip.

I think you're gonna be a lot happier in a wagoneer, expedition, or Tahoe. Especially if you're looking at a v6 grand Cherokee.

Most likely I will end up with the truck.
The strange part about owning truck, when you don’t have it - you want it, when you have it - you question why you have it, since you are using bed of the truck couple times a year and tow with it once or twice.
We ended up using my wife’s minivan more for Home Depot trips than my truck. Lower loading and ton of room inside.
Was exploring other options since my wife doesn’t want a big SUV.

I used to pull my 255xd with the Grand Cherokee. Well like 4-5 times going about 20 min from house. The Cherokee was taking a beating especially when there was a slight hill. There was times I had to let off the gas so it would shift gears. Trades it in and got a f150. Night and day difference. Cherokee was a 2016 v6 altitude.

I feel that, I really do. I traded my truck for my TBSS. It's better for us in every way, but there's that handful of times a year that a truck bed, right then, right there, makes life a lot easier.

So here I am looking at decade plus old sport trucks because all the trucks now are giant lifted monster of no practical use, which is what a truck is supposed to be for.

I pull my 2022 252SD with MY JGC Overland 3.6 without issue or strain. Never spun the wheels at the ramp, even with sand when bringing her in.

I'm surprised to hear you say the 3.6 didn't strain. I feel like the 3.6 strains under its own weight in a GC, let alone towing.

I feel like you drove a defect lol the 3.6 is a great motor for the GC.

I drove several of them. The 3.6 moves it around fine, but does so with high rpm. It makes it feel underpowered to me. I had a hemi GC that didn't have that issue, so that likely doesn't help. That low down instant torque a "big" NA motor has is really nice.

My GC is proud of her towing capacity and the 252, but she does guzzle the fuel…21 mpg normally to about 13 when towing. I can deal with that for the time being vs 40-60k for a new truck…or I get a bigger boat.

Our RAM 5.7L Hemi gets decent mileage when towing the 5k boat (23mpg empty, 19mpg towing). The big V8 just purrs along nicely.

A little more towing capacity at 8000lbs and still not as big as a Tahoe. Expensive, but so are those Jeeps.

13…. still more than I get with my Ram lol.

Our 2023 5.7 Hemi tows the Scarab 285 with ease,

Yes it will be fine. I tow the 252SE hundreds of miles with the V6 GC which has the 6200 max tow rating. Great traction on boat ramps. I don’t go faster than 65 though.

My 2019 5.7L Ram towing 6500lbs worth of boat and trailer does about 14mpg at 70mph on long trips. How are you getting 19?!

Keep it under 68 mph...that's where it hits 2,000 rpm and the variable valve timing starts to open the intakes longer creating more power but consuming more fuel. And the terrain is fairly flat where we live so not a lot of hills which would drop that a bit.

How is your trailer&boat so much heavier? Mine weighs in just under 5k with about 10% or 5 gallons of gas and all the usual gear like life jackets, towels, etc. A full tank should put it around 5,200.
