Has anyone done this? Wondering how different from an auto engine. I at least need to get to oil pump and rebuild/replace, and wondering if I should just do a full rebuild while I'm at it?
Very similar. Some extra seals on electrical components, stainless in places rather than steel, muffler vs water box... but fundamentally same as a car.

Very easy if you know what to remove. I can take a 1.8l out in under 1 hour easy. If you are just removing the cover to get to the oil pump you just need to drain oil and unbolt the engine and tip up to remove the cover. I have done this before to remove the rear cover. Did the whole job in the boat.
Easier than an automobile. No tranmission, antifreeze, torque converter. Etc.
