Did the AK, redesigned cleanout plug and upgraded timing chain all occur in 2016? Also wondering what the minimum water depth can be expected from an AR/SX190 and wondering if the AK affects that.

I'm looking to purchase a used SX or AR190 and trying to determine if there are any updates that are well worth considering. I'm considering anything since 2012 with the single engine at the moment but am a little concerned about the timing chain issue and wondering if the AK and cleanout plug are significant upgrades. I have a small sugar sand jetboat so I know the struggles with maneuviring jet boats. thanks!

I can’t speak to the newer boats, but we decided to take our chances with a 2015 ar192. We saved $27k by not buying new, well actually it was a 2019 leftover. I figure that will cover a few engines if the timing chain goes.

Hope that helps,

I’m not sure about the motors when they changed from MR1 to TR1. But the MR1 did have some issues as well with cracked blocks and cylinder 3 rusting the plug causing it to snap. Overall both motors seem to hold up very well. For depth that is a good question about the articulating keel I think the biggest problem you will have is taking off in shallow water . The back end of the boat drops down the rudder will contact the bottom along with the bottom of the hull that comes to a sharp point and hangs down 2” lower than the previous models. So the general answer is what ever depth the old hull worked in the new hull needs 2 more inches before you contact the bottom. The problem is when the new hull design contacts the bottom it’s a point and the point will wear faster than a broad surface a great invention would be keel shield for the entire keel shaped in V as it heads to the back end . My older boats all had dulled gel gloss and grooves running through the gel gloss from dragging on the bottom I run in sandy and muddy bottoms that are shallow and change with tides .Now I’m more concerned about keel damage so far nothing yet but it is dulled down from dragging on the bottom at some point.

Going back to the original question on the timing chain issue I thought all these engine have the same block TR1 that they updated the timing chain some time in 2017

@Cambo

AR190 has the same 4cyl/1.8L that is in the 240/242 series boats. Not sure what the designation is for this motor. The 192/195 and the 275's got the supercharged 4cyl 1.8L. Some of the newer 21ft boats got twin TR1's which are 3cyl/1.0L engines and did NOT have the timing chain issues that I'm aware of. The only 21's with the 1.8L are the older SS, the 212LS, and the 212X.

TR1's from a 210 FSH
