What makes you guys thing the impeller is toast? The serrated edge look it has on the bottom? If so, I believe that is actually in front of the impeller.
Yup! A quick inspection takes very little time and then you can recognize anything out of the ordinary very quickly.Glad it was what it was! Thank you for sharing!
I wouldn't necessarily pull on that sealant, may be just trim (if you must) it with something very sharp. Pulling the pump apart from time to time (like annually) is not a bad idea.
