I am opening this thread to poll boats registered for the July trip to better understand what conditions you would want to continue under. I would ask that only those registered for the trip respond.

Thank you

We can deal with 2-3 waves/swells. I just don't want to cross with 4-5 waves and rain like last year.
I actually think it was pretty rough at times once we got to Bimini but it did not matter since we were in Bimini.

I’m at a loss. The fact that the weather doesn’t look like it’s going to even get remotely better till about Thursday there has me concerned too. It can really make for miserable days there, with our boats sitting there and nothing to do. There were some places I didn’t go last year due to the winds/waves.

I need a vacation to unplug from work very badly right now. The prospect of my vacation being a bit of work in and of itself is not very appealing as it is. I can deal with a rough but safe crossing. Miserable conditions or possible boredom for the entire week would put me out of this trip with a rapid replan for something like Disney, last minute all inclusive, or even day trips on our home lake with eating out and hiring out all of the housework.

That said forecasts are based on models that incorporate historic data and become far more accurate the closer to the date. I am all for full steam ahead until Thursday before making a call that no one wants to make but may be for the best.

For those on skis, what is the best, most efficient strategy you have found when riding the seas. Is it best to follow in the wake of a boat or keep away from the wake? Have read mixed statements. If conditions are going to be anything like last year, I’d like to find a way to conserve gas as much as possible in order to reduce fueling stops to a minimum.

As long as it is safe to cross. I've never been there before so I can keep busy going all around the islands. Then when it calms down Thursday or Friday try to see everything on the water.

I had Valerie behind me in my wake for some of the crossing and it looked to be a little easier for her. I know she kept adjusting the whole time it was really rough. I don’t think she had to refuel until we got outside of the sands

I personally cannot stand riding in the wake of another boat. I like to space myself out and ride in open water. I can’t speak to fuel burn on a ski as I refuse to stay behind another boat but other boats that have ridden behind others speak to a greater fuel burn. For me, the ocean is actually less predictable when l’ve tried following and I get caught off guard more. Put me in open water away from any boat wakes and I’m good to go. I made the crossing in about 1:40 minutes this year and burned just under 13 gallons. Last year was the most annoying crossing I’ve had. It took right at 3 hrs and I burned right at 13 gallons. Stay at 20 or better and pretty much any ski will be fine. Set cruise if you have it and just hold on. If you are in and out of the throttle I think you find yourself burning more fuel. Carry extra but you really shouldn’t have to use it.

@Valerie was beeping for a few miles in 2017 but made it to the Bimini Sands marina without refueling.

Without any scientific proof what so ever my perception is that where on the wake can make your fuel become better or worse. If the water has to many bubbles on it you get worse mpg , but if you are far away enough where the water has settled but the waves have not gotten a chance to reform again, you will get below average.

On an another foot note, I followed Bruce’s wake very close during 2017 and I could see my fuel gauge drop. Had I not been force to clean water for the second half of the trip I would have joined the drift always club. Needless to say that while on plane you get a false sense of security as the gauge is overstating the remaining fuel.
