Does anyone have any experience with boss or Pyle speakers that are sold on Amazon? I sure don't want to waste money on a cheaper speaker if they just totally suck. Also, any recommendations on a reasonably priced amp.

If you have suggestions on a budget priced system, I would like to know.

Thanks... Everyone, merry Christmas as well!

Stay away from the Boss or Pyle stuff. If you are on a tight budget, look at the Polk db651's. They sound fantastic when amplified and won't break the bank. Probably the best speaker you can buy at that price point.

Try to get a class D amplifier as they use less power . I know Rockford Fosgate makes class D marine amps that are affordable. You should be able to find a nice 4 channel for under $200. Depending on your listening habits, a class a/b may be fine. I know MB Quart makes marine amps that I have experience with, and for the money they are also great.

Which models are you considering?

8 years ago I built a speaker system for the dance team that my wife was coaching. It consisted of four 3/4" birch boxes which each contained four Pyramid 8" subs and two large neodymium tweeters wired to produce a 16 ohm load with a custom crossover that I built inside the speaker. The four boxes were connected in parallel as a 4 ohm load to an old 250 watt PA amplifier. With two speakers pointed slightly away from the home stands and two directly at the visitor stands you could feel the bass and hear the highs on both sides of the football field. A neighbor 500 feet away was phoning in requests when I tested them in my yard.

I chose the Pyramid subs not because of price but because they offered more ouput per watt than other options that I considered. The dance team only lasted one year but they were used at every basketball game, football game and some pep rallies. During the year one of the sub woofers needed to be replaced. They sat in storage for years being pulled out for weddings, parties and other large events. When we moved to our new house I installed them high on the garage walls where they are powered by a 600 watt Beringer amplifier. They are still working great. I use them when working on cars or the boat and we use them for parties.

You may find a larger range of similar speakers at

Although I am very happy with the output of those Pyramid speakers when I replaced the speakers in my boat I researched options and decided upon Infinity Marine 6x9s as the best option for system I wanted to build.

If you do decide to go with these inexpensive speakers I would expect them to handle significantly less power than published, not last as long as a higher quality speaker and have a negative effect on the value of your boat. But they should sound better than the likely cracked stock speakers and work fine when powered by the stock head unit.

Robert,
Here's one suggestion for you. Get with Odin @ Earmark Marine. He's a specialist and knows the category very well.
Check out the Memphis HLCD tower speaker. It's a 2-ohm load and requires no more than 100 watts of honest power per side. So if running a single pair this will make a quality amplifier less expensive to purchase. I'm guessing that you can get an HLCD speaker & amplifier package for around $600 or less.
An HLCD (horn loaded compression driver) is designed using pro audio concepts so that it will project and be intelligible over a long distance.
