Has anyone had this happen? Not sure how it happened but am wondering how difficult it is to swap out. Looks like three bolts? Any advice would be appreciated. The impeller looks fine.

Seen it happen a few times on here. Should be easy to replace as long as the 3 bolts come out

Happens quite a bit. I recently needed to changed both... Those are not expensive.
While you have those off may want to check the sealant in the intake tunnel, it is easy to reach in. I set those allen bolts in sealant (100% silicone is fine for that) as the long one goes all the way into the bilge, you will likely have some water coming out when you pull that one, you don;t want any air being sucked into the pump from the bilge.

I don't know what they do, but I consistently find even 5200 does not last more than a season, I can usually peel parts of it off. Not the MarineTex - that holds great. I'll be redoing my intakes and pumps this week, already pulled them off - will be using bondo (polyester).

As an aside - also replacing the intake grates, both were cracked/broken. Which is a bit strange as my impellers look absolutely pristine.

I would say, most likely sharpening/honing the grates weakens those considerably. I will not be doing it with the new set.

Out with the old:

Thanks for the replies. Going to order one up and get it replaced.

Just saw that mine is broken as well on a 2019 212X. I can’t imagine what could’ve caused it to break. Any idea on cost for a replacement?

Happened on my '17 AR190 within a few hours of purchase. Like less than 10 hrs on the engines.

They worked with me on price (attempted to have it warrantied because nobody inspected before we took delivery and it was SOOO new). I think it was $75 out of pocket, and they swapped it over (gave me the old one) during my 10hr service.

I’m hoping I can get it for $75. The oem website has it at $140 each.

We need a HUMS Kit // Vibration Analysis done here... WOW!!!! I get the breaks/ cracks but how (or at least I have not seen) someone has not sucked up broken pieces into the impellers I have no idea. Catastrophic damage at the very least is all I could imagine.

The grates seem brittle, so if they hit the impeller at speed they could likely turn to aqua dust lol. I don’t recall anyone with a broken gate also have impeller damage or dings. I think of it like throwing a piece of chalk into a blender at high speed.....doubt the blender blades would even know something hit it.

I don't think they are quite that brittle, but you aren't far off.

Mine was definitely questionable quality aluminum pot metal. A nice piece of CNC'd 6061 in there would be significantly stronger, but that begs the question of "Can the hull take it". Perhaps it's better to break the easily replaceable grate than to rip the bottom of the hull apart?!?!

Either way, I'm not 2.5 seasons further into ownership with no other problems.

FYI, these can be welded if you still have all the pieces/parts. I have my old one that I kept and had a friend weld up.

Just noticed mine is broke as well, likely from a rope being sucked up, I must not of checked the grate, I know I always check the impeller after it happens. (Renters not myself getting rope sucked in). Grate is $190 from Yamaha sports plaza shipped. Guess this will be a task to be completed here soon. 02DB93A5-5B9E-4F5C-A26C-E70E917110F1.jpeg

Yeah, whatever that alloy is they use, it is weak...

I sucked up a rope over the weekend and cracked one of the bars on mine. Taking it in for the 10 hour service next week and the dealer is going to check it out to see if it can be repaired, removed, or replaced.

I’m not disclosing to the dealer ropes have bee sucked up or that I’ve rented out. I’m purely stating that there is no evidence of impact. I’m taking it Wednesday for then to inspect. If they get Yamaha to pay for it great, if not I’ll be spending $200 fixing it.
