Hello members,

I have a 2014 SX240 with 4 speakers. A buddy is offering me a used Boston Acoustics GT-2300 for cheap. I was wondering if I upgraded to the drop in Polks, would this amp work? Is it too much power? I'm clueless when it comes to matching stereo equipment. Thanks in advance

thats a huge amp way too much for some inboat speakers

Yeah...that is not class D and it will toast a entry level speaker like the DB 651. Your going to have to up the speaker a good deal to handle that, or redirect the power...I haven't reviewed it much but Class D amplification is almost a must in our boats.

What is he offering it for? I have a Wet sounds 2 channel amp I am trying to sell for a good deal that would work well for four in-boat speakers.

Subs, power some subs. Then turn the gain down a bit and subs. I find subs need about 2-3x the wattage to match a system properly. Think about it this way, subs are usually hidden out of the way where as your regular speakers are directed more or less at you. Subs are usually one or a pair whereas the in boat or towers are usually at least 4 but often 4 just on the tower and 6 in the boat! Also, higher pitched sounds are much more directional and low tones need room to spread the sound waves out to catch everyone's ears correctly.

That is all true @Speedling , except in an open air environment, a sub can be lost easily. All too many guys have put enclosed subs in compartments without direct radiation to the boat only to find it distant and lost. In our boats, you have very little choice as to where to put them. In his 2014 240, about the best place is in the starboard seat compartment facing the isle. But a massive 12" sub will not fit there, and two 10" subs would take big part of that compartment. B0ttom line, without losing a great deal of what your trying to achieve, you will want the entire speaker area of the sub directly radiating into the cockpit of the boat. Without amplifying the in boat speakers too, the coaxials will be separated and distant from the up front bass. Unless your building a pretty big system, this amp isn't very well matched to our boats. The bigger issue will be that if you do build a system big enough to use this non class D amp, your going to have to have a bigger battery bank to support it, and that too is going to cost space, room, and more money. Often, an apparent savings isn't what it appears.

I'm going to through in a different cautionary note concerning that particular amplifier. It's fan cooled and not conformal coated. That means very humid air is constantly being moved over a raw circuit board and its components while it is passing current. It is very common, when used in a boat, even in fresh water, for the control pots to corrode. Easy fix = not in a boat.

I can tell you the Polk DB651'a and the Clarion XC1410 is an excellent matchup. I installed that amp on my 192 and will be running 2 of them on my 212x with 8 speakers and later this summer Clarion is releasing a marine sub amp which by spec should mach up nicely to the polk DB10 subwoofer.
