Dumb question....?

i have to ask, what are signs that you have picked something in the intakes? I am new to jet boats and haven’t picked up any debris yet.

You loose thrust (power to speed up). Boat shakes and cavitation occurs. When you punch gas you hear a weird noise and boat shakes and you don’t get power/thrust. You’ll know it when it happens. It has actually happened to me quite a few times and all I had to do was throw it in reverse semi hard for a second then back in forward semi hard on throttle. Most of the time that works and blows everything out of the bucket. Sometimes you have to go into your cleanout plugs though and pull the stuff out manually with your hands. And there are times even that does not work and you have to put the boat on a trailer and take the whole pump assembly off of the boat. But that is rare.

Remember there is no dumb question. We are all learning. It also depends on the quality/dirtiness of the water you are boating in. Some people never pick up anything. Others in canals with lots of Pine needles, and pinecones, seaweed and all kinds of stuff like that floating in the water it can happen.

We have a LOT of floating weeds in our lake, hard to avoid. Every time we go out I have to remove the clean-out plugs and remove weeds, sometimes two or three times while we’re out, PIA but part of owning a jet boat.

Loss of power, and the engine/pump noise sound when clogged is quite unmistakable.

Thanks for the replies. Had thought about it while riding to a ball game yesterday. Headed to the ICW and wanted to be prepared for it to happen eventually. Really glad I found this forum!
