Easy way to add extra bass

My attempt at a summary of everones thoughts and experience is make sure the speaker is directly radiating in the passenger area and that it is in a properly sized sealed box. Bigger speaker is more efficient than a smaller more powerful one. IB subs will need big boxes so only use IB for free air and know that is the easy way out. Better off going with a sub that requires as small of a sealed enclosure as possible. Avoid mix and match sub types. Hopefully that covers it all so far.

My added .02 Remember that everything is a compromise in a boat and to do what is right for you.

For a guy that isn't looking for a high power output, just high quality music, an IB sub is an excellent choice. But at higher output levels, correctly done systems, the IB sub isn't quite as sharp as a sealed enclosure direct radiating sub. The sealed enclosure is a harder job to do on your own but it can be done . An IB sub is an excellent choice for the do it yourselfer. Why would you ever want to seal one? It isn't designed for it. What David was saying, is an IB sub requires a larger volume of air to achieve its efficiency. We're all worried about space, so using an IB Sabin a sealed enclosure is just not going to work in a boat very well. Just buy a sub that isn't infinite baffle design. Also, if you want to boat shaking stereo system, that's OK! But you're going to want to couple of 12 inch subs to get there if you're music is correct. That takes lots of room lots of battery capacity and shorter times of music play to drive all of that. At least in our boats.
