Hi gang, Newbie to pick ups. Have owned many trucks over the years in a past life, but currently using the wife's SUV to tow. Due to several factors and life changes, we are shopping for a pick up that can fit our needs, but I wanted to check here since I have always gotten great advice in the past. We still tow our 242 on a regular basis, but also think we may add a camper for some trips. I also want one that won't kill me at the gas pump. I am considering a low mileage Hybrid. I thought about a duromax diesel, but they seem to be going away. The Ford f150 Hybrid looks like it tows well. May also consider the Toyota Tundra. I still drive for work about half the year, so MPG is pretty important. All electric is a no go I think.

Any input or experience with these 2 trucks, or something similar, would be appreciated.

If you plan on getting a camper, look into that before you decide on your new truck. Make sure you have enough payload capacity as well as the towing capacity with the new truck. Some campers have heavy tongue weights (especially with full propane tanks and batteries) and you may run out of payload capacity on the truck long before you reach the towing limit. If you are thinking about a real truck camper, and towing the boat, you will likely need a 350/3500 of some type.

I probably cannot get into the camper details, but that is good advice. If we do anything, it won't be real soon, and maybe just something lightweight. Low on the radar, but trying to check off some boxes.

We don't tow anything heavier than a couple 4 wheelers or our 04 lx210 boat , but we happen to own one of each, my f150 ecoboost hybrid and my wife's tundra limited I max hybrid, almost identical powertrains and power numbers , only difference is the toyota if I remember correctly has a little lower gears ,I believe 4.30 compared to the ford's 3.73 . Both fly in sport mode unloaded, both drop to around 14ish mpg pulling the boat, but the tundra can't get better than 19 mpg , the ford gets 26 on the hwy. Both ride great , the tundra feels like a MUCH bigger truck . We had a 2018 tundra v8 that we regularly pulled considerably more weight in horses and trailer than we should've, close to 11k , in the mountains and across Kansas. I don't have enough heavy weight experience with the new suspension tundra to comment on it. My two cents , Shaun

I'd personally stay away from the F150 hybrid. If you want to get an F150 just go with the normal 3.5 ecoboost. Rode in an F150 hybrid the other day and it was really clunky.

Very helpful. I think Jim clarified my thought process to where I am not going to try to buy the perfect truck that will do everything. I am going to look at some low mileage used ones, and see whats what.

We have a 22 GMC Sierra 1500 with the Babymax in it. 3.0 liter inline 6 diesel.

Very quiet, very smooth with the 10 speed transmission and plenty of acceleration due to that gearing. We live in SC, drove to Denver two years ago and San Antonio earlier this year. Averaged around 25mpg from our driveway and back after both trips, revs hold around 1400 at highway speed. That’s the best engine GM has put out in a long, long time. Yeah yeah, the true Duramax is great, the 6.2 is good, but this baby diesel is really all anyone needs. We have the first gen LM2 engine which is like 277 hp and 410 lb/ft torque. The new LZ0 is a little higher, 290 something and 430 I think. If you don’t want a truck, you can get the same engine in a Yukon or Yukon XL.

We have an SX190, truck doesn’t even know it’s back there. I put a cubic yard of (wet) soil in the bed a couple springs ago for a new garden. Highly believe I exceeded the weight rating but only had about a mile to the house from the garden center. Truck was squatty and of course braking was impacted, but the engine and transmission didn’t care.

Sorry I don’t have any Ford insight. I had a 250 super duty several years back for work and loved it but wouldn’t own a 250/2500 or bigger for personal use unless I absolutely needed it.

Good luck!

You pretty much confirmed everything I have read about those 3.0 diesels. I think they are fading them out due to emissions standards. If I could find a low mileage one, I would seriously look at it. Since that seems unlikely, my number 1 now is the ford power=boost hybrid. So many excellent reviews, love the generator you are carrying around in the bed. Thanks for the info, much appreciated.

Yeah I’m not anti-Ford by any means. I’ve just always bought some GM flavor. I see the 3 liter diesel sticking around, I don’t know of any emissions squabbles with it.

I should be getting a new 150 for work next year with the generator in the bed, I’m very excited about that. I know my coworkers love them and there have been zero issues.

Thanks, I heard they stopped producing the 3.0's but maybe that was Chevy. I saw some videos saying the issue was all the crap they have to pack into them to pass emissions standards is what is causing some problems. Maybe it was just the opinion of one person. I know when I visited the Chevy dealer, I asked if they had any with that engine, and he lost interest immediately.

RAM had issues with the 3.0L diesel and phased them out. Haven't heard such rumblings from the GM camp.

Have a couple relatives with PowerBoost F150's. They both love them. One guy does voice/data cabling, the other is a manager for land development for a large home builder. They both "use" their trucks on a regular basis for lots of "truck stuff". That 9.6kW generator is an amazing accessory for a VERY reasonable price when compared to other generators of similar capacity. Uncle uses his to power a "river house" a few times a year, and it works great for that. Cousin used his to keep an aerator going for two days while he moved his fish from one pond to another (don't ask, I don't know the details, he's weird like that), and has said that's the only reason the fish survived.

When I was looking at fullsize trucks, I REALLY liked the powertrain in that truck. The interior and I didn't get along at all though, so it was out for me on that front.

Good luck!

Tundras are still having issues with their engines failing. That's enough for me to avoid for now.

I drove a Powerboost f150, they're amazing trucks. Smooth, powerful, and efficient. The electric motor helps make the truck feel MUCH more athletic than our expedition with the Ecoboost.

I have read so many similar comments. Hoping to test drive one this week. Hate the new vehicle price tag. If I can find one we like with not too many miles, I think we will buy one used.

I'm on my second F150 with EcoBoost. I drive a lot for work. Traded in my '21 with 75k miles a few months ago for a '24. I am very happy with it. It tows my FSH210 way smoother than my Explorer did. For some reason my '21 seems to have gotten better mileage than my '24. I'm hoping that is just a matter of breaking in. I live in a cold climate and the mileage gets quite a bit worse in the winter. 24-26 in summer and more like 18-20 in the winter. I only get about 11-12 when towing the boat, but it has a 33 gallon tank so it is not a hassle when on a trip.

I find the truck powerful and smooth. I have the Platinum, so it is nicely appointed. It has all the power I need. When driving it normally I am virtually always in the Eco mode. When I want to show off I go into Sport mode and the thing is almost too quick!

Well, after comparing new vs used, we felt better buying a new one. XLT power boost (hybrid) . Once we knew the exact trim level we wanted, it was just a matter of finding the best price . December is a good month to buy, and no dealership seemed unwilling to talk. Truck drives really well, and fits in the garage !
Thanks to those that commented here to help me with this.

I got a way better deal new than I could used. Also the interest rates for used were abysmal. I got 1.9% for 72 months on my truck new back in March. You get it local? I've bought 2 trucks from Crossroads Ford and both were good deals.

We learned a lot this time around. I asked a few dealers for their best out the door price. We were financing very little, so it turns out you either get the best price paying cash or using their outside financing. To get the lowest interest rate, thru Ford, they could not meet my price (55k) . Apex crossroads were almost 5 k higher than where we wound up at Lillington. Capitol in Raleigh came down, but no where near enough. I bet if we went to Sanford or Oxford, we could have done slightly better, but Lillington also is installing a bed liner right now as I type this, and adding all weather mats. We used their credit union for the balance, and got a rate in the 3's.

Interesting. I ended up putting about 20k down. They took about $12k off MSRP, which beat any deal around here. I tried Crossroads in Fuquay and they couldn't beat the price. They also didn't have the truck I wanted. Apex had the color and all the options I wanted. I think they probably gave me a little more than other dealers since it was my second truck I bought from them. I'll start with them next time, but if I'm buying new will likely special order from Granger Ford. They have the best prices in the country and even after paying to have it shipped are still a good bit cheaper than anyone locally.
