So I know this has been talked about a lot but I have been eating for awhile now and can't get a clear idea. in the next month r so we hope to build a metal shop in the back. our 2008 sx 230 will easily fit through the likely height of 9 foot for the door.. but if we upgrade to a newer boat one day I want it to be able to fit one with a tower... if you erw in the planning stages... what height door would you build into the building.

I would go at least 12', a boat on a trailer with the tower in the upright position is typically 10.5' high.

Humm.. that neans the walls will have to be 13 feet high... the normal wall height is 10 feet.. I would nees to add 3 more feet to it.

I have a 10 foot garage. I have to lower tower and tip Bimini frame back, move bot in half way, then tip it forward to move all the way in. Reverse it when pulling out. I wish it was 12 feet.

You would have to know how much height above the door opening you need to allow the garage door to open to determine the proper wall height. Most guys I know that have 12' garage doors have 14' walls.

With my AR230 HO, the door opening is 12w x 14h, 10h is not enough and the tower tow point will hit. My storage spot is actually a corner of our horse arena. And since i ran wiring thru my tower i do not want to take it apart or off. If it is a wide open metal structure, no collar ties or overhead joists, then you could put a taller door in on the gable end and not interfere with any internal supports. Most metal fab garages/shops I see advertised are freestanding with minimal internal structure. It depends on your choice of building. So theoretically you could put a 12' door on the end of a building with 10' walls, just depends on the internal structure, width and roof pitch.

I recently talked with a garage door guy and he told me you can purchase doors in 3" increments. For instance, my boat has a 11'-1" height. I could get a 11'-3" door and back it right in. I believe you have to add 12" to the door height on the interior wall to accommodate the springs and hardware.

I'm not sure what size door you'll need, but I can tell you from experience: Always remember to fold down the bimini top before trying to back the boat into the garage...

The way the budding will need to sit on the property we will have the doors on the sides. I have to see how much more money the additional height is. gonna start emailing companies. anyone have any dealing with amy of the metal building builders?

I have thoughts of building a barn style building from steel SIPs. The entire structure including the roof would be SIP construction with no internal supports except possibly a ridge beam. It would be quick to assemble and inexpensive for an insulated building. It is unlikely that I would heat the building but I would add a mini split AC unit with heating capability to use on occupied days during the summer.

I'm very envious of you being able to build an outside storage on site. If it was me, I'd build it to fit an RV just in case my life took that turn in the future.

Dont' know if it is feasible compared to a taller building...but maybe set the building on a taller foundation or sonno tube, not sure what the building requires for mounting to the ground. A little extra concrete might be cheaper than steel.

Glad this come up as I just dropped of some preliminary plans for a custom home I'm building at the arcitech. One of the questions that came up were wall heights and the garage door height. With tower folded down how tall do I need to go? I told her 10ft but it sounds like that maybe short or should I try and go at the tower up height? I'm not sure how high I can get it I will have to go back and look at the plans. The garage dimensions are going to be 28 x 48 so it will fit a 24 ft boat. Yes I know wierd footage but it fit the plan.

With the tower folded down the height on the trailer is around 8.5' so 10' door height will work. If you had to lay the tower down each time you put the boat away it might get a little old, so if you can I would go with a 12' door if you can.

We will have to see if I can pull the 12 ft door off I think I can but will have to verify.

If I were you I would definitely build it to the height of the tower in the up position. Make it as easy as you possibly can to store your boat the way you want to. When we built our storage structure for our toys we built for the future. We had a camper at the time we bought our Yamaha so we built to the height of a potential future 5th wheel camper. We built a wood framed structure with a brick veneer to match our house because of the architectural rules at the time in the neighborhood. I wound up with 16' walls on our half garage half carport design to accommodate our storage needs. It's roughly 24' wide and 34' deep and it's basically split down the middle. My garage door is 10.5' wide and 14' tall. The door is in 2' sections and I wanted a power opener is why there is a 2' header. We built so that if we ever wanted to add a tower to the Yamaha or buy a bigger trailerable boat we'd have a place to keep it. Plus, it looks proportional to the rv spot next to it. I tell you what, it makes life way easier when you can open the door, back it in, unhitch and shut the door and you're done. I can uncover it and open everything up to dry out if it was a wet day. It's well worth the investment! Do it right the first time!

I went 12 x12 on my boat garage addition. Boat fits perfectly without having to fold the tower. Plenty of growing room for the future. I designed and built it myself, so just ask if you have any other questions. IMG_3467.JPG

Can u come to north carolina and build me one?

I'm in the final stages of designing a detached garage now for the primary purpose of the 212x w/tower up....(with added NAV light).

The boat with nav light is 134" tall (11.16 ft) my current garage is 11'6" tall with a 8 ft tall door. I raise the tower back up once inside often.

My design is going to have a 12ft high garage door and the walls will be 12ft high as well. from that top plate I will go up/over the boat bay with a Cambered Hip truss design. This will allow me to mount lights and ceiling fans over the boat, use the space otherwise consumed with attic, and lower my roof height"

The garage opener will be a side mount style: http://www.northshorecommercialdoor.com/li85wamogado.html

A few images from the plan: I'm going to rev this design to change the main roof to a 12/6 pitch down from a 12/8 this will lower the roof 2.5 ft.
an alternate plan will stop the main roof at the center dormer and let the roof along the boat bay run full depth as the primary
