Hi everyone,

I have a 2011 Yamaha AR240 and we have had some issues when decelerating on the water from a marginal speed (say 20mph) to low speed (5-10mph) one or both engines will stall and need restarted. Interstingly, when we check the jet pump housings, plugs above the pumps, they are full of water. When we drain the water by removing the plug the engine will start up right away. Does anyone have any experience with this type of issue? I am likely doing something wrong but would really appreciate any guidance you all can give. Thanks

Justin

I bet you cleanout access hatch is flexing allowing the cleaning safety switches to activate causing the motor(s) to shutdown. Look at the hinges and see if the mounting hardware is loose. Also, next time out on the boat have someone stand on the forward (hinge side) of the cleanout hatch as you slow down, if the motors don't shutdown then you know your problem.

It's normal to see water over the clean out plugs. Usually caused by your wake washing over the swim platform on quick decellerations. @Andy S hit the nail on the head. Your hatch switches may also be out of adjustment.

IMHO water isn't coming over the rear swim deck but rather from the cleanout tray drain hole which is underneath the swim platform. There is not check valve in there. Water shoots up the drain hole when coming off plane into the cleanout tray then down onto the plug tubes. Rear upper deck is NEVER wet. It would take thousand lbs or so to get the lower deck low into the water and then you could have water come over onto the upper rear deck but you have to submerge the lower deck DEEP in order to do that. Normal boating conditions never get the upper deck wet no matter how hard you try to get it wet coming off plane. Give it a try and you'll see it's more hard than people think.
