I have a problem with my Speedster 150 4-Tec 155hp that doesn't make sense and I need your expertise. I'm getting a P0616 code and check-engine light continuously beeping, but only when I go above about 5,000 RPM.

This code is apparently for "Starter relay short to ground or open circuit", but the boat starts without issue and shows no code or check-engine light at start-up. The code doesn't seem to match the symptoms.

The code and check engine light resets itself after shutting off the boat, but will reappear the next time it's running above around 5,000 RPM.

The boat is running fine otherwise and I notice no performance issues.

Has anyone run into this before? I checked my fuses and those appear good. Voltage at the rectifier and battery were tested and appear normal.

Could my ECU simply be going bad and it's throwing false codes?Code.jpg

Sorry I'm not any help, I'm new to these but noticed 773 Hours ? WOW that's impressive. Good Luck with you issues.

No idea, but... replace the starter relay? Should not be that expensive. I think that would be a reasonable first try.

Yep, it's been a great boat! Never had to do any mechanical work to it besides replacing the starter and regular maintenance.

But since the boat fires up just fine and the code doesn't get thrown until 5,000+ rpm, why would replacing the starter relay do anything? Isn't the starter relay only in play when you're starting the boat?

Frankly, I have no idea. But the code is for a short or open circuit on the relay, which is a cheap part. Unless you have a better idea, I would take the gamble and buy a relay. If it fixes it, then we can all noodle on why as we jet without error codes...
