My wife once a month leaves key in run position so kids can finish a movie while she unloads the Costco run.
Always seems to forgetit because kids come in when movie is done.
She had the day off today and kooys are on call break and she calls me at 4 while i am laid back and numbin the dentist chair.
Electric locks and her spare is in truck. This happens so often that the extra extra spare stays in my truck. She had decided to pull in tight to the boat so cables couldn't reach length of boat.
So i swap batteries, pull her truck around, jump my truck and on my way.
Fyi: jumper cables from a boat battery sitting on ground won't jump a dead battery. My start battery was close to it though!

So theory time: extra small start only battery somewhere and put a boat switch.
See any glitches?
Other than where to mount i kinda like it. Depends on needed crank amps really.

Interesting thought.

Why not keep a small jump pack on hand, and just make sure it stays plugged in all the time?

You're no fun. That makes too much sense. Never used one before so didn't think of it

Sorry.......

I carried one in my last boat instead of adding a second battery. We had a VERY modest stereo (1 head unit and 4 speakers, no amps), and could go maybe 4hrs with it up loud then would need a jump. That little 3.0L Mercruiser took a bit more juice to turn over then our Yamaha's though. I did use that same jump box a number of times to start a friends car, or strangers boat at the ramp that showed up with a dead battery. It was super convenient.

To answer your question initially though, I think a boat switch and a secondary battery in the van/suv would work fine. Fitment and locations would be the hard part I would think, and then how do you charge the spare battery under normal operations?

Jump packs can save your butt. I had a Ford with a boat battery switch installed by a P.O. Don't even need to lift the hood.
