Is there any way that I can turn the flywheel on the MR1? I'm trying to reinstall my starter, and it only goes in so far. I don't want to tap on it and possibly chip some teeth.

Pull the plugs and turn the impeller?

I am going by memory but I think you can pull the plastic cover that shrouds the love-joy coupling and turn it from there.

Can't you just turn the pinion gear on the starter?

Can't you just turn the pinion gear on the starter?
I've tried that, move it a bit, retry, etc... but that starter position is really hard to get to and it's just not working out. I think it's pretty tight anyways, I had to persuade it with a prybar to get it to come out.

Then I guess your best bet is as @Bruce mentioned is remove the spark plugs and have someone slowly turn the impeller as you try to install the starter. The flywheel teeth will eventually line up with the starter's pinion gear teeth.

You can turn motor over with a pipe wrench on the shaft at the intermediate bearing housing behind the motor, just pull the spark plugs first.
